Thread: Supplemental Events

    Default Supplemental Events

I pre-registered for Extemp Commentary at Nationals this year, but I'm a little confused about re-registering. When I re-register, can I change my event to Supplemental Debate, or am I stuck with Commentary? (I didn't realize I couldn't use a computer in Commentary prep.) Thanks for the help!

I believe you are stuck with it; however, still try and change it at re-registration.

Yeah, they won't let you change to something you didn't preregister for, but you don't have to do commentary if you don't want to. If not being able to use a computer is a dealbreaker, you can just not compete in the supplementals.

Okay, thanks to everyone! I was planning on really trying hard in supplementals, though, so I'll definitely still try commentary, even if I fail out and get two downs immediately. Thanks!

Wait! Where is it posted that you can't use a computer in commentary prep? I thought it fell under the same guidelines as IX and USX.

    Okay, I've done some research.

There seems to be conflicting information. The National Tournament Operations Manual says that "No electronic retrieval device may be used" for Extemp Commentary (bottom of page 34).

However, the letter that was mailed in mid-May containing confirmation of my registration clearly states "Computers or other electronic retrieval devices may be used in Extemp and Commentary, but not Impromptu."

    So which is it?

Adam Jacobi? Are you there? Was this simply missed in the manual change for this year, or was there a mistake in the letter?

This *is* an official statement from the NFL: computers are allowed in extemp commentary, under the same guidelines as extemp.
The views expressed reflect the views of the author and not necessarily the views of the National Forensic League, its Executive Director, officers, members nor shall anything contained herein be constituted, interpreted, or used to evidence official policy of the NFL. Statements do not constitute acceptable material for use in competition.
