Gustavus Adolphus College and its nationally recognized speech team are proud to offer the sixth annual Summer Speech Institute for high school students to be held on the Gustavus campus, July 21-28, 2012. We have extended the institute by one additional day. 138 students from NE, SD, IA, KS, MN, ND, CO and MT attended the 2011 institute. If you want to obtain results in speech competition in an environment conducive to learning, then this is the camp for you! We offer an additional two-day Champions Extension session for additional polish or to work on a secondary event. Students entering their freshmen, sophomore, junior, or senior year in the fall of 2012 with a minimum of one year competitive experience are eligible to attend. The first 150 applicants will be accepted. The GAC-SSI Tournament champion and second place finisher will receive an $8,000 Gustavus Forensics Scholarship!
Goals:
Interpers will learn to locate and cut material to meet the allotted time limit, and how to develop distinct, believable characters.
Public speakers will learn to locate topics, to research effectively, and to write speeches with a purpose.
Limited preparation competitors will learn to research effectively, prepare files, construct arguments, and utilize preparation
time effectively.
In addition to event preparation, everyone will learn vocal warm-ups, tournament etiquette, competitive ethics, the confidence necessary to compete at the highest level, and the values of excellence, preparation, revision, and embracing competition.
Each student will work on a primary event over the eight-day, seven night intensive camp.
In addition to working with Gustavus Adolphus College coaches, students will work with and learn from nationally recognized high school coaches, collegiate coaches, and collegiate competitors who know the ins and outs of high school speech.

What Students Had To Say About The Institute:
I have never worked harder on forensics in my life, but I know this experience will motivate me in the regular speech
season and other aspects of my life to always work hard and strive for excellence.
I received individual attention from many talented coaches with the desire for me to succeed.
All of the staff have such a contagious energy and passion for this activity. The individual coaching was fantastic!
This camp made me understand excellence.
You didnt just teach us about speech, you taught us lessons about life.
The enthusiasm for the art in each person not only inspires, but it creates such an environment that we as students love to learn.
