Just a few edits! Would anyone like to review any of the final rounds?
Duo-
Grimm's Spectaculathon- they were decently good. Not anywhere near clean, but were entertainers.
Wild Things- were very clean, but had me confused at times. Overall, some of the best performers of the round.
Ruthless- It was "ok". It's been done several times, all the same way every time. I wouldn't mind seeing a new spin of it, but that doesn't happen.
The Monster...- they reminded me of Phantom Tollbooth mixed with The Math Curse- same kind of transitions, and really, really simple story line. I wasn't a fan, but they were good at the type of stuff they pursue.
Infidelities- They were "ok" as well. Here's the thing- before I even knew what their code was associated with (school wise) I KNEW it was Cleveland right off the bat. The cut of the duo was tooooooo similar to that which I saw from 2000 (or was it 1999?) duo from the same school. It is obvious a well written script and has great moments, but it was just too similar for my taste.
HI-
Nurk- Did much better in finals (people were more apt to care and more willing to give him reaction) than in prelims. He was much cleaner than half the round, but had very few "aha!" moments, and that hurt him, I think.
Adaptation- the script could be done well (and has done well before on the circuit) but I feel that the blocking was just not where it should be, and the characters weren't distinct enough for me. Otherwise, I think the performer has the talent to grow.
Darcy's Cinematic Life- I loved her. She was very clean, had great presence, and had some pretty hilarious moments. It was a simple piece, and the style of interp suited it just right. I feel that she will do well this year on the circuit. Clean/crisp/distinguishable characters.
Junie B Jones- I left the room and didn't get to see this (needed to check on postings for the next final rounds).
OO-
All Tangled Up- I thought the performer was very "cute" and likeable. She had a very relaxed and warming speaking presence. I just feel that the message of her OO was a little overdone... even though she did a great job with it. It was about finding the adventure of your life, by starting with taking that first step towards something you would love to do.
Mind Your Manners- Her intro was very... non-unique at this day of OO. She tried to do something "uncomfortable" and "different" but it felt forced and tried. The message, however, is kind of an important one- that we have lost our manners. I feel that the writing was a bit off. It felt very repetitive, as if she was running out of ways and things to say that we are rude. Her speaking was pretty decent.
"Oprah"-tory- She was def. my favorite (aside from my bias towards my student, who I will not talk about in this). She had me from the beginning of her speech (so shocked she got 5th!). Although, and I do recognize that, again, it is an overdone topic- I like the way in which she attacked the subject of "self-validation". Essentially that what we are seeking as acceptance has to start within us. Loved her style, loved the humor, and the personal was actually really sweet (especially seeing that her teammate looked so idolizing at her!).
Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda- If I remember correctly - this was about going after what you want. If I'm wrong, I apologize. I don't remember much of it, other than that she had a GREAT speaking style. I would argue maybe a little too blocked out and robotic for me, but great tone and volume. Very politician-esque, which is good considering she had to leave for Congress finals. hah.
A Show of Hands- I don't know why, but I wasn't a terribly big fan of this. It felt like 2 minutes of why no one will raise their hand in class, to 5 minutes of telling me a story about a girl getting raped outside her school dance, and 3 minutes of telling me that I could have helped save her life by raising my hand (metaphorically) and calling 9-1-1 to save a life. I don't know- just too much DI for me, too much story for me, and a topic that frankly, like I said before, is touched on a lot- "speak up".
Ooops, double post.
