You could go with "Olio Intaglio" by Wanda Coleman. This is about losing a baby, and how the world abandoned the mother. Also "Until we Dance for Joseph" by Jessica Care Moore" about losing a boyfriend to AIDS and how the community turns its back on the death. Finally, "the subtle art of breathing" by Ashe Bandele, about the author comparing her life to a suicide she saw on television. All three have made the State finals here in Wisconsin or semis in poetry by MY students! All are told from an African American perspective so I hope this helps.

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. One of my favorite songs/poems about about dying unexpectedly or dying young (the crew was quite young). Based on a true story.

Olio Intaglio would work well. I think that Until we Dance for Joseph would as well. The last one not so much. These poems are also told from a woman's perspective so I don't know if that helps or hurts.
