I was recently invited to compete in Alabama's Hall of Fame High school tournament and noticed a few oddities in the rules, particularly in DI. 1) You have to use a manuscript and 2) It is an interpretation event not an acting event.
I understand the first rule as that's the way college is (although I find it weird that HI is the same way. Seems like character pops would be tough with a binder), but I've been trained in a school of thought that is very strongly set in the idea that interp is acting, which has led me to want to get everyone's opinion on this.
How is interp different than acting. Should it be approached differently? How do you judge one interpretation without considering the performers acting ability. I'm not saying the difference between theater and interp, which are completely different, but rather the actual act of acting.
