ok so i want to use slam poetry. the cfl says that "the literature chosen may include any form of prose or poetry, fiction or non-fiction, except drama and strictly oratorical composition written to be delivered in real life, such as monolouges from a play." and i was wondering since slam poetry is meant to be preformed in real life is this leagal. and also have you ever seen slam poetry in a round. what were your thoughts.

slam poetry is pretty common, I guess according to that rule, it might actually be illegal, but that would mean songs are too, and slam poetry and songs have done well to the point where, if they were illegal, someone would have called the competitors out on it. I think that rule is really just trying to say you have to use actual poetry (which both slam poetry and song lyrics are)
    So...that's coming along

Slam poetry is essentially what the trend is in Kentucky poetry right now. Most of my friends have done Anis Mojgani and the Def Jam poets to the point where it hurts. This is not to say it is a completely bad thing, because I love poetry, I'm just saying that it's overdone in my area.

Slam poetry is really common in speech, especially Big Poppa E. I LOVE all of it....however many judges and even competitors don't feel the same way lol.

I love doing slam poetry! My friend uses Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns and does extremely well and I am actually doing a piece by Sierra DeMulder about a school shooting.
Literally, if my life were a drama it would win nationals.

In Texas our UIL tournament has a similar rule, but I did Slam last year and won the state tournament, so I don't think that's what the rule is trying to say.

A great place to find AWESOME slam poetry for competition is by looking up videos from CUPSI (College Union Poetry Slam Invitational), which is like NFL for college slam teams. You can get a lot of great stuff from really talented people. Also, some (a lot, actually) of the stuff from Brave New Voices is also great. You can find it on YouTube as well.

A girl on my team is a huge slam poetry person and she took 1st at State this year and 3rd last year. I think it really just depends on your theme and how you perform it. She did two poems on being Jewish and they were absolutely fantastic. But the trend is really catching on in Colorado after a bunch of other schools are seeing how well she's doing with slam.
