Question Dramatic Interp Advice on a Piece?

Kay so i'm new to this whole thing ad i have a piece picked out, but it's... not me.

I want a piece that tells a story, a moving story.
    Children, for instance.
Anything with having a child, adoption, miscarriage, killing, abuse any would be perfect because thats a focal poing in my life and would be easy for me to throw myself into and really make good.

Ar even something with a mother/daughter thing.
    FAmily too.

Does anybody have ANY suggestions as to what maybe i can do?
    I would love your input

And, by the way, i'm doing Girl, Interrupted right now and it's good it just doesn't fit me.
And i can't do it right, i don't feel i'm doing Susanna Kaysen justice.

    Again, input please.
And just general advice on how to do Dramatic Interp well would be great as well.

    Some good pieces about children

    Sudden Acceleration by Dan Nigro
Story about a mother who accidently kills her son because Ford made faulty cars, and her trial to sue ford. I'm not sure if its based off true events, but its a pretty good piece.

I also once read a really good piece about a mother who loved the beatles, shared that love with her daughter, and then her daughter dies and the beatles become a source of pain. I can't remember the title, but if you can find it, it's pretty amazing.

As for tips, if you decide to cut a book, read the whole book. Connect with your character. If you don't feel like its actually happening to YOU, the judge won't feel the piece, and you'll get voted down.
Make the judge care about your piece. Especially if you do a piece with a common theme. Stand out.

Have you tried doing a google search with particular keywords? That can be useful to get a list of books to look into. Perhaps try looking around a book store, do some keyword searches, or go to particular stack section and wait for some titles to jump out at you.

Usually when I need to find a piece or monologue for theatre I head to the library and just start browsing through their short stories and plays. You could even go to your local library's homepage and do a keyword search there. Odds are they will have something and you can go borrow some books/short stories/plays.

This new website called The Forensics Community has an interview on how to use a library and what services they offer--if the library route appeals to you. The site also offers numerous articles and videos of solid advice for all things Forensics.

The most important thing when it comes to picking a piece is that you can get into it. If you can't feel what your character(s) are experiencing then everyone watching will sense that. So it's a good idea to pick a piece centered around the topics you care about. Whatever your piece, put passion into it. Become that character. The judge will be able to recognize that.
