Thread: Gendered Language

    Default Gendered Language

I noticed that my title is "freshman poster." While I may be a male, I don't believe all the people on this site are "men" and as such, I request the title be changed to something that is not gender-biased.

Because it excludes womyn from the process of posting, both on a subliminal and overt level. Though many people doubt it, you cannot deny the impact of language on our daily lives.

That's the problem. It's a subversive influence that tricks you into complacency and living your life in the kitchen (i.e. "where you belong"). Language is the root of all communication; when we transmit the message of gender-biased language, we convince ourselves that one gender is dominant over the other and then accept it to fit the norms that society has created for us.

to me freshman is just a title like mother earth - nobody has challenged that word yet. and it doesn't trick me into doing anything. what is this, some kind of joke? i am gonna go to college and get a good job, and being called a freshman doesn't change that at all. and if you would want to eliminate all subversive influences you had to do a heck of a lot of work. why not start with the tv? the media in its very language uses certain words in a subtle that leads you down their path of enlightment. getting all subversive words out of the world? we couldn't talk at all.

I think the exact opposite. If it were to be named "Freshwomen" it would be regarded as too sexual and demeaning to women who don't believe they have to shower or be, as Outkast put it, "so fresh and so clean."
    Things will turn up eventually
