Default An Explanation of What Discussion Is

For anyone that does not know what Discussion is, or if you just want a few tips about improving your skills, fellow member John O'Sullivan (JohnsRUs) has written an in-depth article explaining the event of Discussion.

The article can either be found using the link on the main page, or by clicking here:

is it worth your time to just try it out once just to see how well you can do with it?

    WELL........

considering you need to do a bajillion hours of research (if MN, at least), i don't know if its worth the effort for just one meet......maybe three or four meets, but i wouldn't do all that work for one meet. but it is uber-fun (most of the time)

i disagree. While it definately helps to be researched, and research often seperates the good from the really good, its not key for understanding the event. If you would like to try competing in one tournament to see if you like it, having no research won't significantly bar you from seeing how it all works and contributing to the group. My advice: try a tourney, if you like it, continue to compete and do a little research. The research, however, doesn't all need to be done to compete in just one competition.

The real thing to remember here is that Swodaem is from Kentucky, and Discussion there is bound to be very very different from Minnesota.

You probably just want to talk to your coach about it, to see what it's really like there.

I realize that Kentucky and/or Indiana most likely will not have the same style of discussion that we in MN have. We've already discussed this......

i agree with david, when he says to talk to your coach......find out the rules of discussion in IN, and at least have some understanding of what you're supposed to accomplish in a round. Trust me. My first meet, I went in completely blind not knowing anything and it sucked big time......

If you want to try it out for a meet, I would. And, if you decide that you enjoy the event, do the researching you need to do to be successful in it. It helps.

OH! and do NOT make a discussion round a debate, WHATSOEVER. Think of it as a courteous business meeting.....
