Thread: At what point should we allow double entries?

Default At what point should we allow double entries?

At districs this year we had quite the interesting incident. While some districs have the third place person go because of someone double qualifing...we had the first, second, and third place people in HI all qualify in DUO (Two in the same duo) and thus had to go in duo. So the district sent the people who took 4th and 5th place to nationals...Is this really the right way to go about creating the most competitive national turny?

it really isn't, but i do have to agree that it does allow more students the opportunity to compete. i guess the big question is which is more important: having the most competitive tournament, or allowing a bigger playing field.
i do have to say that the rule doesn't encourage kids to do try multiple events. if they can only qualify in one, why should they waste their time trying out different events? i would imagine that's how their attitude would be about it. it doesn't really do them justice, especially those who are interested in doing college. they go from doing one or two events to 5 or 6.

i think it gives more people a chance.... but like i dont think it stops people from doing lots of events.... i know a few people in my district do like 8-9 events during the year... and they see which one there best at then do those 2 at districts!

good point. i guess it just ranges from district to district b/c most of the time you can only double enter at most of the local tournaments in alabama. i know that there are other districts that allow kids to explore a bit more like MS. i believe you have the opportunity to do four IE's, debate, and congress if you wanted to, but i could be wrong.

GMU allows you to enter up to six events. I decided to try that out last year, and had so much fun. Writing "T.E.W.R" didn't get old...ever. Just three years ago double entry was allowed, but they changed the rule in order to have a greater competition size. Let's just hope the pendulum swings back the other way soon.

yeah, see the dumb thing about XE is that it isnt specific at all. :P DE and TE stand for double entered and triple entrered respectively... cuz that wasn't very obvious or anything...

At GMU, for all the final rounds they had GMU team members deliver all of the pre-round "info." All the good stuff like: Congrats to all the finalists, Turn off your cell phones, Telling the judges the time limit and so forth. In my Duo final round GMU sent a m/f duo in to "prep" us. The wrote GMU1969-their names, a made up peice name, above which they wrote Q.E. Whether that was "quadrupel" or "quintupel" I still don't know, but I have to say their performance was one of the most amazingly creative set of final round announcements I have ever seen. They actually put on a 3 (ish) minute performance describing the rules of duo. Sorry, to semi-hijack the thread but in case you haven't noticed, my train of thought has long since derailed.
