Default What consitutes published material anymore? locate, question

NFL rules and local rules seem to fluctuate or change regularly. What is the current interpretation of published? Some material at nationals does not show ISBN. Internet? Audio CD or DVD? One of my reasons is there are a few pieces which have been at State or National competition which appear to have been in this gray area. One example: Has Crippled Lady by Whoopee Goldberg been published in any other form than the Audio CD from her Broadway performance? Have been trying to locate it and Dominick and Eugene and a few others. It appears Script City has a few items but they most of their stuff has not been published when you call and ask them. And Crippled Lady, I have found CD information but nothing with ISBN publishing. It was in final round at local tournament yesterday and I know was at Nationals at one point. Thanks for the input.

I can say with 99.9% cetainty that Crippled Lady is NOT published. Doing this piece at Nationals or on the national circuit is/has recently led to DQ. A quick check with Whoopi's Goldbergs agent will tell you this piece in not published.

As far as ISBN#'s go- ISBN#'s don't mean something is published. ISBN#'s are actually a tracking device for selling material. Something can be published and not have an ISBN#. The NFL confirms this in their rules.

Recordings are NOT considered published in the NFL nor in any other state that I can find- for example I know that Indiana, Illinois (recent changes to rules), Minnesota, Texas, and California have specific rules that state pieces can not be copied from tapes/recordings. These pieces are considered illegal.

My advice is to let your coach know and have them pursue it.

Where was your tournament and what piece did you do in finals?

from what I can tell. The student doing the piece has been in finals at 3 tournaments this year. The only tournaments that will pursue publishing are State and Districts.

Crippled Lady is listed as CD audio published from Whoppee Goldberg's broadway show. At least one of the pressings DOES has a lyric book with it and the selection of Crippled Lady appears to be in it. From what I have been told that is how it was allowed at State Competition and NFL Nationals previously.

Our students in the rounds with her were doing NOCTURNE and SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER

    Good luck.....for a wonderful season

My understanding is that would not be considered legal. The lyric book (tiny insert in the CD) would not be allowed at NFL tournaments. I believe there is presidence for this. If you are in Illinois, you should check with the Illinois administrator in charge of Speech. If he/she says that's illegal, than you can alert that person to the problem.

I agree with speechgal, I believe it has to have an isbn number to be concidered published...but, I am not sure.

Published material doesn't necessarily have to have an ISBN number, but if it does have one, then you know it's published. Usually I look for a publishers name, the year, all that jazz on the inside of the book (and the CD booklets don't have those).
