I like the seemingly intelligent debate on this issue. However, I don't agree with the whole black suit = bland thing. I love my black suits and, while I don't have anything against colored suits, I prefer them. I mean, I think it's a great thing when someone can stand out of the crowd through performance and/ or awesomeness while still looking similar to everyone else. I also really love shirt/ tie combos. I have like 8. yeah, I think speech might be the perfect segway into gayness for straight dudes. It gives them a sense of style and flair. Even that sounded gay. I also totally agree with the no effort comment. There was this girl in my HI quarter at ASU (just one of many examples I have) a few weeks ago who had just a weird skirt and an odd blue colored dress shirt on. She wasn't great, but the weird, eye-distracting nature of her attire made me dislike her performance much more than I would have. Basically, if you don't put in the effort to look good, don't bother doing speech. Whether you like it or not, appearance is a judgeable factor.
Harvard! I'm excited.
By the way Abbey, I too love your red suit. Very nice.
Yeah, I won a Chewie.
InterProd '06... **** Yeah.
Okay Danny and Andy, you two are making me blush...
i say,
if you're gonna be good at something, might as well look good while you're doing it.
some small measure of hope for the possibility of meaning
I have to say I have never seen anyone in a cute red suit...it brings about memories of shoulder pads and teased friz-perms...but I haven't seen your suit, Abbey, so I'm lookin' forward to it!
I must say its a red jacket with black buttons and a black skirt. i wasn't ready to take the all red plunge. ha.

o m g how did i not see this topic earlier?!?
well, my sophomore year i wore a grey shirt with some weird tie to every tournament, then me and my duo partner qualified to nats and so we went and bought a crap ton of matching, brightly colored outfits. ever since then i can not even begin to imagine how i used to wear the same thing to every tournament.
All my outfits are worn with a black suit.
You've got the bright blue shirt with black tie
bright orange/salmon shirt with orange striped tie
greenish shirt with black pasley tie
black shirt with bright blue tie
black shirt with dark red tie
i've also pulled of the black shirt, white suspenders and white bowtie a few times....haha
and as you can imagine there's a lot of mixing and matching to be done here.
i usually end up planning out my outfits at least a week before a tournament....cuz im cool like that? no cool isn't the right word...obsessed! yeah, that's it.
I always wear my tie in a double windsor knot. its the only way to go.

I usually bring a pair of flats to meets to wear when i'm not competing, and this weekend at states when i left them in the extemp prep room as i went off to speak someone stole them, which I actually find kind of hilarious since most of the people in there were guys (I know that it was probably a girl who took them, but somehow i find the mental image of a guy stealing girls shoes very funny.)
I used to have this really awesome blue striped tie (as awesome as a striped tie can be lol)
My partner and I were coming out of duo finals, and my friend who was going to HI finals notices my tie, and says it would match better with his shirt. So I give it to him and he won 1st place.
Needless to say I never got that tie back
The only thing worse than not knowing
is you thinking that I don't know
