can anyone tell me if it's legal to use songs out of plays or prose for poetry? just a thought.

I think it's allowed However, there was ONE ballot which said NO SONGS!! Check the NCFL website www.ncfl.org and look at their ballots and see

I think it's legal. It's legal to use songs. So I don't think it matters where you get them from. I know Chad Winegar did an entire poetry program of Prince songs and never got called on it.

i'm just wondering if it's okay to use poetry or songs out of plays and prose. like serious bizness has a bunch of funny songs, could those be used as poetry? b/c when someone sees "serious bizness" written up on the board, they'd be like "hey that's a play."

Im pretty sure you cant. The rule is, it cant be a song "origianally written for drama". Which, that would rule out the songs from a play. But normal songs are ok. But I think a way to get around it, is when you turn in your copyright info, dont turn in the lyrics in the play. If you can, find a CD of the songs in the play, and turn in the copyright info on the cd, not the play. Im sure that would cover it. lol and just rename your program. dont call it "serious bizness", call it something else. Hope it helps!

I am 95% sure that you can use songs for poetry..However I'm not sure about prose. Checking out the NFL site would be a good idea. If after you read the rules you still think it's a big risk, I wouldn't proceed with the idea because you never can tell with judges. Everyone has their own way of interperting the rules. Many rules aren't made crystal clear.
