Timacuan DX-ers. Shocking Story, actually. Varun Akula, who would have won Varsity State in DX hands down, was disqualified from the event for singing his speech in the last round.

    The Varun-less list:

    Ania Amador - Lake Highland
    Sara Carbocci - Celebration
    Jenna Friedman - Winter Springs
    Tom Hansberger - Trinity Prep
    Alan Helm - Trinity Prep
    Ashe Hudson - Lake Highland
    Rachel Starkings - Celebration

That is quite a shocker. The person who disqualified him should be shot. Singing is a wonderful technique to use in Extemp. I used it in a pre-elim round speech, but I did take first in that round as well.

singing isnt bad... its just funny... i remember one of my best friends had a topic about aids in finals at st. marks. he sang a parody of a song singing, "baby if u give it to me, ill give it to you, youll give it to him, he'll give it to her..." he didnt get dq'd but he got downed bad in both extemp finals rounds even though he gave good speeches. some ppl are just really uptight about singing because they think it brings down the spirit of extemp. i think that it shouldnt matter what you do as long as u get ur point across and u give a killer speech. i mean, i dont think it should be allowed to jump on a table and yell at george bush or anything in the middle of a speech, but then again i dont think thatd be very effective... it'd just alienate ppl. basically, i think that unless something is COMPLETELY degrading and repremandable in a normal real-life situation, it should be allowed in an extemp speech, or any speech for that matter. ppl just need to use disgression according to their judges. if you get a judge that disapproves of singing or whatever u do in ur speech, then they will down you, and ppl have to be ready and willing to risk that. but no i dont think there should be any disqualifications for that kind of thing. is it in the rules that you are not allowed to sing in a speech in florida? i am from texas so i am not very familiar with how things go down there.
