I think coaches forcing people to wear something appropriate is better than not caring and having half your team show up in pajamas...
I do think its silly though to force girls to wear skirts... thats just, well, silly.

My school has a very small team (like, total junior high thru Varsity is about 40), but we are currently 9th in the state medal count. My coach works us at our own pace, but he also works us hard enough to help make us successful. His philosophy is that we need to dress like professionals and act like professionals. We have fun, but we have definite class, compared to some schools. His dress code is really flexible, as long as it fits you and doesn't go against his policy of looking professional. Girls can wear skirts or pants suits, whatever color they prefer. Guys have to wear dress slacks, a button-down shirt, and a tie, at minimum. I personally prefer to, in a way, dress for the character. Last year I did the DI "shakespeare for my father". My main competition outfit was a blue-navy blue skirt suit, that had 3/4 blazer sleeves, with heels, and pearl jewelry. It fit my character to wear a skirt.......but not pants. I didn't wear pants at all last season, because it wasn't classy-mid-50's-English-woman, which is what i was trying to help bring my message thru.

One kid on my team (he was a VERY telented 8th grader) wore black pants, a white button-down shirt, black suspenders, and......a tie that had pictures of pigs on them...........one of the few times he met Ms. Natalie Sintek, he got the 1, she got the two. It was the first time he wore the tie, and from that moment on, for the rest of the season he wore the Pig Tie, claiming it had special powers that helped him win....hahaha  Whatever floats your boat, i guess....

Hey, if you can beat Natalie, you deserve to be able to wear whatever you want!

hey, power to the Pig Tie Man! good Lord, my coach would flip if anyone tried to wear a pig tie...we have to wear power ties...and yes, i agree that it's silly to force us into skirts. personally, i'm about the most anti-girl girl on the team. i hate skirts, shorts, sleeveless tops, the color pink, and makeup. but i put up with skirts and cosmetics b/c i posatively love speech. my coach always said that since Western runs state, we want to impress Western, and Western doesn't like girls in pants. then i went to speech camp at Western last summer, and i got it from the head honcho, Judy Woodring herself, that she doesn't mind pants at all. in fact, some girls are uncomfortable in skirts and really should wear pants! as long as it's tasetful and professional, there's no problem with pants at all! haha, so i'm wearing pants this year, and my coach can just deal with it. i'm a senior. so there!

besides, i haven't actually told him that i'm wearing pants, so he can't do anything about it. ha!

but i completely agree with having guidlines, even strict ones, for appropriate dress for tournaments. i competed against a girl in one of my d.i. rounds a couple of years ago that just wore these black pants and a black shirt that didn't quite cover her middle if she didn't pull it down all the time. (she wasn't fat, but she wasn't exactly skinny, either). and her hair was just down, and when it was her turn to perform, she tossed it up in this uber-sloppy bun thing, and took it down as soon as she was done. it was bad. definetaly go for the professional look. it's just so much better.

Come to southern hicksville minnesota, and you will find some of the most atrocious clothing in rounds......NOBODY at this one tournament wore suits but my team..........hence, probably part of the reason we had finalists in every event, taking 1-2 and sometimes 3 in several of the categories.....And this was the meet before our Sections! sheesh!

I can't wait to write clothing critiques on ballots when i can judge

oooooh yes. that's one of the main things i look forward to, is judging on all the little stuff that my coach always makes us do, because "judges watch for that," stuff like how you sit, walk, dress, and how good of an audience member you are, when most judges don't really notice that. except, of course, at the worst possible times, such as the one single time that you look down during another's performance and get marked down for it. i really think that stuff matters in a performance, and it just kills me to see sloppy people do so well when they clearly don't care as much as others.

You havent lived until you show up at a tournament in a new pant suit and everyone is dressed up like pirates and nijas. Like really tacky..it was chaos..apparntly it was a themed tournament. But my coach didnt tell us so we would look classy.
My coach lets people wear whatever they want pretty much..it has to be a professional-ish but not everyone can afford new suuits so you know.

There is a tournament in Oregon that is around Halloween where everyone dresses up - my coach wanted to go to it last year and I told her NO.. I just think its pointless. I mean, maybe its sorta fun, but I would think people would use it to get past the "no costumes" rule in interp events. Plus watching a speech given by a pirate or ghost might be a bit distracting!

i agree, but that would definetaly be fun.

hey, new suits don't have to be uber-expensive. heck, you don't even have to have a new suit. the head of our state league tells people to just go to a consignment shop. it's cheap and if you can find one that fits, it works just fine. it's ridiculous to spend insane amounts of money on a suit.
