In this short essay I will teach you the basic rules and ideas of the Individual Event (or IE) "Discussion." I don't claim to be an expert, I have however been fairly successful, and so I should give you a general idea of how the event works. So without further ado, here we go…
The general idea behind discussion is up to eight people sit around a table and discuss a task. Unlike other IE's in discussion each of the eight competitors is in direct competition with one another.

Before starting, ask your judge/timer (if available) how time signals will be given during prep and speaking. This will ensure you are getting time signals.
For students new to this event, work on keeping your prep time to 1 minute 30 seconds or less. Try to work on not using note card or use it vertically so you can easily conceal it with your hand.
