Poetry as a Supplemental?

Gahh! I'm wondering this too because I'm doing poetry as a supp at nats. I just made it to state in Minnesota with my poetry program but I feel like nats is going to be 7382882x different.

I did poetry as supp last year and am this year. The difference is in some states you can walk around I. Poetry and other you cannot. I from a state that you can't and this can make a big difference in your rank. I did not quarter because of this.

Also you are on the up/down system.

Ok so basically motions are good, up down system, and 5 minutes? Is that including an introduction? Are scripts required as well?

You still use a binder with your poems in it. Movement is okay dependent on the judge and he up/downs

I placed 2nd at Nats last year and I really didnt notice any huge differences in Nats and regular tournaments other than the time change, but I'll fill you in on what I noticed.

Slam is probably your best bet because trying to tell a story in 5 minutes is nearly impossible

I'd disagree with ZayZay, movement is not a good idea. I think I competed in 8 rounds or more and after the 4th round I didn't see any movement or crazy binder tech.

Make sure your poem flows. If that makes sense. In finals every single performance sounded like one continuous poem.

Feel free to take chances. Every piece in finals was edgy. Two poems said the n word multiple times, another poem the guy flipped off the audience and another poem was about Hitler's mistress. So I think the judges at Nats are a lot more liberal and will generally reward you for taking chances.

Dumb question, maybe, but you can do a program, right?
Like, it's acceptable to use multiple poems..?

I honestly dont know the complete answer to that question. I know it's 100% acceptable to do multiple poems from the same book. I, however, do not know if you can do different poems from different books.

I'd also like to point out that if throughout the year you've taken poetry to multiple tournaments and consider it a real even you'll probably do relatively well at Nats. Like, if you've taken top 3 at the majority of tournaments you've been to, then you'll probably advance to at least the 5th round of competition. The 1st 2 or 3 rounds are full of kids who dont take supplementals seriously and are only doing them because their coaches forced them to.

Zak its Xavier (Zayzay) I don't like the movement thing, i just saw judges rank kids higher that did in a couple of roundes. sorry if it sounded like i believe in the moving thing.

You can do poems from multiple books/sources, but they must be published in print.
