If you're going to cut a piece from a book, make sure it has a complete beginning, middle and end- a full story, not just a clippet of a novel. Make sure we can all follow the plot line, and if it's taken from the middle of something, give us the background info that will get us listeners up to speed during the intro.

The first thing I would ask is what type of stories are you drawn to, comedic or dramatic? Any particular topics you are interested in exploring? I would also suggest selecting a piece you love, not merely basing your choice on whether or not it will win over an audience (shallow reasoning). Performing...well everything starts with fully understanding and dissecting your piece. Without that you are lost. I'm being general here, but if I started going into details I would be writing a novella, haha :)
Here is a link to a speech a debate website that has a BUNCH of tips of Prose mastery. There are articles and videos (click the video link at the top of the page for a full listing) available for use. Everything from how to hold and fully use your book, to "reading" techniques, and vocals are covered. I will gave you the link to the broad overview of things to do in the event: http://www.forensicscommunity.com/prose/excelling-prose-advanced-guide and you can start from there.
If you want to get more into the details go to the Prose main page and select an article.
Cheers!
