Anything fractured is so overdone! Especially in KY. No no offence to people who do them, cause some people do them really well! It's just that we get them so often. Pick something original! Something that *means* something to you! This year I picked Horton Hears a Who..which i guess can be called overdone cause everyone knows it. But I love the story so it means something to me. Oh, and funny is always good! not sure how old this forum is..i didn't check..hope i'm intime to be at least kinda' helpful! ~Rachel

Hold on...i actually spelled that right. So I guess that means you are either doing a fractured fairy tale...or don't know what one is. LOL I thought you were trying to correct my spelling! Um..well fractured fairy tales are basicly spoofs of traditional fairy tales. They were, and I guess still are, a huge fad in Kentucky and that's why I don't really care for them. I did one my freshmen year and just couldn't stand it. However, so as not to make a blanket statement, there are some pretty funny ones out there and some people perform them really well. Anywho...I'm still just proud because I didn't spell "fractured" wrong... :D

i have avoided fairy tales of any kind for my entire speech career. even two years ago, when i was a freshman, i could tell that regular fairy tales were overdone, too. especially frog prince pieces. i can't even count how many there are. storytellers today need to look for something completely new and original, and even though that's really tough, it's totally worth it.

I think it would be kewl to see one done about aliens... a different approach to storyteliing..hahah...
I've seen stories told over almost every thing imagined:
* goats *frogs * birds * PRINCESSES/PRINCES/royaltly(i can't spell to save my life) * bears * WORMS *ELEPHANTS *cats *witched *horses *mice

thats all i can think of for now...got ne more...?

there was one about aliens at greenwood finals. but he used the wall as a prop, and i'm fairly sure he got last place that day. he was a cool kid, but i didn't particularly like the piece. possibly b/c it was so predictable.

you talk like most story's have deep and engaging plots

the plot doesn't have to be deep, but yeah, it does have to be engaging. the audience has to be able to keep their mind on what you're saying, you know, not be bored out of their minds. i've heard some stories that just kept going and going and going and going and going and really didn't have much of a point. for example, i saw one two years ago, and it had something to do with cooties. a bunch of little third graders, the main two characters a boy and a girl, and you hear all about how the girls are gross (the narrator was the boy), and it ends with the teacher crying b/c kennedy got shot. i saw it and thought "where did that come from? what just happened?" even my "wizard of the mall" was more interesting than that.
*is proud of the wizard of the mall"

"a lot" depends on your point of view. it's about average. just think of it this way: the most that any school can send is three. and you know not all schools will have a full slate. they take the top 18 for semis, and then the top 2 from each of three semis rooms for finals. all you have to do is be in the top 18 and you're fine!

All I have to say is that Veronica has one of the funniest Storytelling pieces in our region, if only for the fact that it's written by The Far Side's genius author, Gary Larson. Go Veronica!

 Thanks Jon!... MAN!! Regionals! So Terrible!... All the of the Storytellers i saw but ONE,didn't have the passion, or drive for storytelling. The others didn't care about it, and thought it was B.S. There is hardly any competion in my region in ST. There was one guy from Greenwood, that KICKED ***! He was awesome! There was only 8 competors in ST yesterday. It was good for those who hadn't PQ-ed yet.
One girl (who i competed with) came up crying to me that she had finally prequalified & she had been on the team for 4 years. So i guess it worked out for some.

Regionals was like cake..sorry to sound arrogant, but I mean there was almost NO competition in any event. I hadn't even practiced much since Assumption, and I still did ok.

02-24-2004, 09:40 PM
that judge was a moron...and i still got a good score...but i just think i deserved the one..but then i always do.
