I need some help picking my serious prose.
So far I've got
The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
Crazy Beautiful by Sarah Bratz-Logsted
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Jerk, California by Jonathan Friesen
Any opinions on these? Which one do you think would be the best?

Tell-Tale Heart is a little bit overdone. But unfortunately I don't know any of the other pieces.

YES!!! Do not do the Tell-Tale Heart or the judges will cry/die/go to sleep during your piece. I personally like The Outsiders, though...

The Outsiders is the rare classic that I've actually never seen done, but it could potentially be forensics gold.
I just realized the annoying pun I just made after the fact and I sincerely apologize for it.

Really? I think I've heard a bunch of people (at least on FOL) who are doing The Outsiders.

No I don't think I've heard The Outsiders, but I could be wrong. I say give it a shot if you like it, definitely don't do Tell-Tale Heart unless you're absolutely head over heels in love with it, and you have no problems with the other two being overdone, considering I've never even heard of the books or authors.

As much as I love The Tell-Tale Heart (and did it once for Conference to fill in for our Prose Reader b/c she couldn't go...first time with Prose and I made it to finals...oh, the power of Poe!) I wouldn't recommend it b/c EVERYONE and their mom knows that story. It worked for me b/c it was a one-time thing. No one on our circuit was doing anything horror related either. But to do it on a regular basis...hmmmm...
The Outsiders, if no one in your circuit is using it AND if the cut is good, can be fabulous. I have never seen it performed; probably b/c everyone assumes b/c you have to read it in school it's overdone. The other two I am unfamiliar with so those actually might be better picks b/c they are "unknown" (judging from the responses on this board). As long as the story is solid, I would go for the "unknown."
