Just based on context, this kid's falling on his dad off an apartment building and onto a sidewalk. That's pretty obvious. So at the least the dad is quite seriously injured and the kid is very much shaken up. They probably both end up in the hospital, but the dad clearly got the worst of it.

I don't think it really matters, if he passed out or died or just fell asleep or whatever. The important thing is that he's fading out for some reason and that his dad absorbed the brunt of the collision for him. Regardless of what actually happened, the meaning within remains the same. I wouldn't concern yourself with it too much.
