Hey everyone!

Lets post qualifiers/predictions here for the California State Tournament!

My predictions for Oratory:
Tina Nguyen - Gabrielino - Will take top 3

My predictions for Impromptu:
The junior from Leland who won Nationals in Impromptu last year. I do not know his name.

My predictions for duo:

Wizard of Hip - Logan - Will take top 3
Pete - San Marino - Will take top 3
Jungle Book - Leland- Will take top 3
Hercules - Logan - Will final
Shadow Box - Schurr - Will final
Ghetto - San Marino - Will final
Freak The Mighty - Logan - Will final

In my opinion, that would be the ideal final round.

That would be Taman Narayan. He is a senior.

i'm not so sure about jungle book getting top 3...i mean don't get me wrong i love their duo and i think they will final for sure, but i think there are stronger duos than jungle book fighting for top 3.

You are probably right. I just love those guys though. Even though they are not necessarily going to take top 3 at state, I hope they do because they are such nice people and they deserve it. With all the tough competition in California this year, I doubt they will take top 3, they will final for sure, but I really hope they take top 3!

i disagree. i saw the jungle book at stanford and it was my first time seeing them and they were flawless. then i didnt get to see them at berkeley but i got to see the duo final round and i think, if they were in that berkeley final round, they coulda taken 3rd, maybe 2nd, but probably 3rd.

but robot you are right, everyone has their opinion and come state time, all that will matter is the judges opinion, so who knows lol.

but i am really excited to see the state duo final round! i hope i qual!

I agree wiht BBall's prediction, although I don't see Freak the Mighty in the final round. And Jungle book could be there, but not Top 3. Duo is rough this year. I think Jungle Book could be there, but I think a Gabrielino Duo can make it in there. May "All Aboard hte Marriage Hearse" or "Evil Dead" or "God and Poker". But we'll just have to wait and find out.

You think Hercules will go in Duo? Steven Leal always wins TI, and Coleton Schmitto is always a finalist in his HI. Why put them in Duo when they can get more points putting them in their strong events?

now that i think about it brutus is right. i knwo almost for certain he's gonna take his TI and coleton will take his HI. so there's one more open spot.

You guys are right. That means that another SoCal duo will probably slide in. Most likely another Gab. duo. To be honest though, these things never turn out this way and most likely its going to turn out to be like last year, where duos that we would never expect to final make it when weird things happen to the duos that we expect to final... like what happened with the Truongs last year.

The big story that everyone was talking about in our league is how Shah/Shakir doing the Jungle Book was not at the tournament in duo. I talked to Shakir and he said that they had to drop out of the tournament last minute becasue Shah was extremely sick. He did say however that they would be at the 2nd part of the qualifiers on 3/22 and hope to qual there. Sorry bout not knowing DI/DUO pieces.

yes, Kochar qualified for state in OI. Ng will attempt to qualify in HI at the second part of the qualifier.

As far as the duos,

"Elf Rebellion" - really funny. good sound effects/tech. good comedic timing
"Matilda" - solid characters. funny. not much tech, but the tech they have is clean.
"30 Reasons Not to be in a Play" - really good comedic timing. not much tech, but good recurring jokes, that never get old haha
"Dying City" - dramatic piece. Good acting on both parts. about a guy who does not want to go to Iraq to serve in the war. ended a bit suddenly, but still good.

Yes, I agree with you, it will be a tough fight between Wizard of Hip and Pete for 1st and 2nd. You are right Pete could be at an advantage because state is in socal, but the Truongs are yet to beat Wizard of Hip this year. Its going to be extremely interesting. I'm excited!

Am I the only one who ****ing hated "The Shadow Box"? Oh Lord, it was horrendous. Well, I wouldn't call it "horrendous", but it sure as **** shouldn't recieve the accolade it has been recieving. Maybe i'm being biased, because I am a theatre student...but man. She had a great accent, and a nice full voice. The guy wasn't too bad either. But one thing that really "irked" me was her lack of emotions. It was like a blank canvas (as my teacher would say), and I could see right through her. There was this one part where she was suppose to be in denial... She was suppose to hide her sadness by juicing out all the hope she had left. However, I did not feel that from her. I just felt like she was playing depressed throughout her speech. Also, that huge scene where they fight... I felt it in the beginning, but then the guy started screaming his head of, but he wasn't even articulating. I could not understand a word he was saying. (I knew, because I've read the play before, but I couldn't hear it). It felt like he was just screaming..and screaming... oh ****, the girl starts to scream too. Then she started to cry... but all of a sudden, all her crying went away when she saw Steven. In real life, people don't do that. It just felt very exterior to me, is all. Man, I am just bagging on this duo group. Maybe it was just that one round, who knows?

For Dramatic Finals, I was a little bit... "wtf?".
1. Jordon Phillips (Ribet Academy)- Love Unit? (Deserved it)
2. Danny Chao (Gab)- Joel (Did not like this piece, at all)
3. Enid Lee(Arcadia)- Keeping Promises
4. Finny Vuong (Gab)- ?? (Horrible...horrible...horrible)
5. Charlie Bentancourt (Gab)- Gas (Eh.)
6. Mallory Moreno (Gab)- This Irish Piece (How the **** did she get 6? She deserved at least 2nd)
7. Victorialyn Valenzuela(Schurr)- Caught in the Rapture (She also deserved it)

This is kind of rude. Just because you don't nessicarily agree with others opinions about the speech, doesn't mean you need to totally bash it. Saying things like, "Lord it was horrendous" is a little uncalled for.

i agree saying it was horrendous is very unnecessary. you could have simply said u just did not like it and that u disagree with peoples views. im not a fan of the piece, but i would not go to the level of saying it was horrendous. both performers deserve credit for the accomplishments theyve done with the piece. it was not a horrendous piece by any means, i just did not like it very much.

thats just my opinion, i can see how others like the duo though

But HumanAshtray, I have to say, I have said some harsh things and been very critical of duos in the past, but saying it was horrendous is a bit extreme. I enjoyed the piece and I think they will have no problem finalling at State.

I think if you know so much about theater and acting, you'll have no problem finalling at any Interp event you do choose to do at State.
No, I will have a lot of trouble. These people who do speech are ****ing creative geniuses. Sound effects, technique, voice, accents... I am usually in shock, believe me. Acting is only 1/4 of a great speech. I don't even know that much about acting, I just said I was a theatre student. I tend to analyze people's characters...

And guys, you need to calm down. I did say, "It was horrendous...well I wouldn't call it horrendous". Please, re-read what I wrote. I did have some nice things to say about them, speech wise. And I do feel bad for publically bagging on them, but I stay with my opinion. And someone said that just because my opinion differed with someone else's, doesn't mean I should bag on their speech... I believe I am entitled to my opinion as well. I'm sorry you guys disagree with my view on their speech... They are both talented, talented people, don't get me wrong. Her DI last year was beautiful, and he's a master at HI. I just don't believe this was a good Duo speech.

Like I said, the reason I didn't like it was because it was very exterior. Blocking, accent, voice was pure excellence. I just didn't like the acting. And let me end it with..."MAYBE IT WAS JUST THAT ROUND". They could have done better in previous rounds, WHO KNOWS. All I know is that some rounds, I just don't feel my emotions. I'm not sure if they did, but from the outside looking in, it looked like a blank canvas. Excuse me for my opinions.

Let me save you the time and warn you that this is an awful script to try to do a duo on adn would take a lot of talent to pull off and be successful with...i don't even know you and am telling you that you can easily find somehting more original and something of higher quality than mulan...but if you don't want to take my advice, the truth is i ahve no idea where to find it sorry

Kay, I think the script "Mulan" they did was VERY well cut. I think it's funny, but the Truong imitations were really awful, and they weren't as clean as they could've been. It seemed very novice-y with lots of LOL moments. The little kid kinda reminds me of Mario Nguyen, haha.

As far as DI, we have some talent in our league, but none coming close to Stephen or Tania from last year.

At state, from our league, look out for:
Danny Gould - Bellarmine - "Zoot Suit":
He is Stephen's successor from Bellarmine. Very good hispanic accent/character. Finalled at Berkeley

Rachel Giacalone - Presentation
-Finalled at berkeley. dominant in our league. It is truly a shame that she didn't qual to nats. everyone was shocked that she didn't final

Yasmin Hadian - Leland
Tania's successor from Leland. Very good range of emotions and characters. Finalled at Berkeley and will do damage at state and nats.

I expect all three to final at state. Yasmin and Danny will definitely see outrounds at nats, and possibly final.

awwwuh :))

well, i like to think my HI is less about big "in your face jokes" and more about a mix of obvious humor, intelligent humor, character humor, subtle humor, and more "mommy judge" humor :)

plus... the fact that i have a storyline, character development, and do well enough on my own without having a "laugh crowd" in my outrounds (since my school is too small to have more than 3-4 girls watch me) ... well, that makes me fairly proud of myself and my school!

(and the fact that i have no interp coach and actually came up with everything myself. hahahaa.)

Regarding Mulan: Give them a break. It's a duo with a novice kid and a JV kid, both of whom worked pretty hard to qualify. I'm sorry Ghetto didn't qual, and they really did deserve to, but I think it's just kind of *****ish to keep going back to "Oh, Mulan should have lost" and "God it was all Mulan's fault." Unexpected people win unexpected things all the time, and I the way we should go about it is really just to congratulate them and, since they've qualled, to hope they do well. I don't see why you guys are getting off on "oh, they'll get powned[sic] at State." ****, if they lose, they'll lose, but that's no excuse to look forward to that unfortunate ending for them. That's definitely not in the spirit of duo competition. They didn't do anything illegitimate (I do /facepalm at the Wizard of Oz parts, but they're just a freshman and a sophomore and they DID cut out some of the more obvious ones for squals) and they took 4th place, albeit unexpectedly. I know Evil Dead and Pete will have a good shot at making State Finals, but I hope Mulan the best just as well. And so should you.

Ryan has not been beat all year. I don't think he will start at state.

To correct you, he was actually beaten at our League 2 tournament by Evan Bartz - "The Auditioners", who took first, and Zade Shakir - "Investigator Q", who took second. Ryan took third.

The main point you are getting at though is that he has rarely been beaten. There is always time to change it, but I feel his piece is so solid that it won't be happening at state. He will win state.

Ryan went 5,6,4 in semis at Glenbrooks. That's not exactly "not being beaten." Granted, it was early in the year but it was the only tournament he's been at with a large East and Midwest representation.

miniglinda,

i saw you at state quals 2 the past weekend. you were watching duo finals also! whatd u think of that round? which duos do u think will do well at state?

miniglinda
03-24-2009, 10:45 PM
so, for the three qualifiers (sorry for the length... but i'm bored and have nothing better to do.... hahahaa)

DISNEY'S JUNGLE BOOK: solid duo. plenty of tech, balance of lines (not characters, but i don't think that really detracts from the piece), good acting (they don't make the dramatic parts TOO intense, since it's generally a more upbeat piece), and they REALLY have great chemistry (you watch BOTH of them equally, not one the whole time)
--> state predictions: will definitely sem and SHOULD final... but it will depend on judging and who they hit in prelims. if they do final i would give them first, but judges will probably wind up giving them 4th or 5th.

ON TIDY ENDINGS: I thoroughly enjoyed this dramatic piece. I feel like oftentimes dramatic duos get forgotten if not REALLY dramatic and when in a room of mainly humorous duos. I liked the balance between the guy and girl and i really liked their acting. The piece itself is also amazing- harvey fierstein is an amazing playwright. I liked that I didn't come away from their duo feeling uncomfortable, since the subject matter was AIDS and homosexuality. Most people would have destroyed that piece if they over acted it. They pulled it off quite well :)
---> state predictions: would love to see them sem, and i hope they final... but california is a tough Duo state.... odds are... well, i just hope they final :)

SNOW...SORT OF... WHITE: lemme tell you, whenever i see this as an HI i want to shoot myself. i've ONLY ever seen the SAME cut with HI... but i liked their cut of this piece. Once again, there was a balance of lines, but not characters (but i think it took away from the piece here, since the narrator is such a "normal" character until the end). Acting-wise, it was pretty good, considering the quality of the piece doesn't have "deep" characters (hahahaa, though most HIs and Duos don't if humorous). I laughed at this piece since it has several laughable moments, but i dunno if i would've ranked them 3rd. I actually preferred the less upfront humor of "The Nerd" just because I appreciated their acting more and felt like more was developed throughout. I'm glad these girls qualled though! :D
--> state predictions: sems, yes. finals, well, i'd love to see them final since they are from my league... but it will be hard up against logan's duos, san marino's, and leland's other duos.

yeah i mean they also technically beat out ghetto too (not like it matters i think they were gonna take their oo and hi) but still i find it all pretty comedic....the whole "dishonor" thing is so annoying ugh...but watevs haha

....seriously? umm i do not even see how that it is possible. How can this beat out shadow box?!

Whatever, like you said, I'm sure they will get, as you say, pwned, at state. hahahha

And it is clear that they took some bits off the truongs from last year. its so obvious!!

yes that's it...it is absolutely awful...i mean the fact that it beat out shadowbox is ridiculous....but watevs they'll probably get powned at state and yeah there's been a lot of talk about them copying hte truongs duo of wizard of oz from last year...there's like 3 or 4 distinct parts in there actually

..wow...and this beat out shadowbox???..there are so many parts copied form the wizard of oz.

You guys have some things messed up

1st, everyone at State Quals was saying that the girl in shadow box had horrible acting skills, but if this isn't true, then I must say that Jon and Jasons Duo is much more polished and much better than that Youtube video, which is an old version of it. There is much less parts with the Troung Duo in it and it is hilarious now. Try getting your facts right before blinding saying another Duo is better than the other

First of all one person said she wasn't taht great of an actress, I think for the most part people agree Lindsay was great adn teh guy was good but just not as good. Second of all I am not saying they aren't polished, they are. But I mean truth is at this point if you're not polished you have no chance. Everyone in the semifinals at state quals was polished. And yes they may have cut out some of hte Truong parts, but they are nevertheless still there adn if they're going to copy the Truongs they should at least do it all out, and not hold back. At the end fo the day they qualed and I wish them the best. Adn when it comes to saying that one duo is better than the other it is a matter of opinion not facts. In your mind Mulan may be the best duo ever and to others it is not, like I said just a matter of opinion. Just like you say "it is hilarious now". You may find it funny because you go to school with them or may even be Jon or Jason (I don't knwo and it really doesn't matter) but others might think that the humor really isn't that funny. Like I said just opinion. In my mind I don't think Mulan deserved to qual, but the reality is that they did and I wish them the best at State.

Yasmin and Danny will definitely see outrounds at nats, and possibly final.

all three made it to berkeley finals i beleive, where i saw them. to tell you the truth, i think only rachel (does august osage county correct?) has the chance of finaling. the other two didnt seem nearly as strong.

I could just feel that way because in our league Danny always dominates doing Zoot Suit.
and Yasmin doing the Perfect Match does really well too.

I vote we answer the OI question!!!
I don't know enough about the OI kids to say anything about it.
:D

as far as Extemp, I think Evan Larson is a definitely final round, probably champ, considering his vast collection of "1s" is INSANE.

as far as Expos... Aakash is my hopeful! from bell. he's doing baldness and I think he's worked a LOT on his speech. I hope Tanya from Presentation does well too...
Logan, though usually dominant in Expos a few years ago, hasn't had a very strong showing recently... though their boards are AMAZING.

any ideas for OA? or DI (I would LOVE to see Rachel win. her acting is SUPERB and SO believable)? or maybe Impromptu? or uhhh... anything else?

That has absolutely no relevance. Nothing indicates that I presume you haven't conversed with him because the fact thereof doesn't change anything.

Insofar as my response is directly premised on your very own words, it doesn't mattter - as that doesn't change the fact that it's only signifying how he "comes off as," a phrase explicitly denoting "appears to be." You're committing the fallacy of believing one cannot make the statement "X appears to be ____" after having a conversation with that person - that overliteral interpretation assuming that this wording is only used with looks is not grounded, as that statement is still entirely applicable in language regarding a simple conversation. Ex: after talking with a teammate before a late outround, you might say to another after he left 'well he was pretty chill, he appears to be confident and prepared' when by all means the chat still only was indicative of how he appeared when he might have been quaking inside while displaying a stoic external posture. The main point of course is that appearance is merely one's own external interpretation of an individual, and just because someone or something SEEMS to be one way doesn't mean they really are that way and should be judged as such. Just because the world appears flat doesn't mean it is, and thus one shouldn't judge it as flat.

Furthermore it's pretty absurd for one to believe themselves suddenly master and expert of another individual's character from a mere one or two conversations within a length of a year.

Next, your statement about me "judging a comment before dissecting it" also is terribly flawed. The issue is that you're judging an entire PERSON, not a comment.

Last of all, you're criticizing him for a bad attitude towards other competitors, yet you then embody this bad attitude toward him as a competitor...

Sunday, people don't get points just for making a rebuttal :P, then every CX debate would be a tie, and AFFs would always win in LD! ;)

Haha, I'm David, and I highly doubt I'll semi, let alone final.
I think Oscar and Nabeel have a shot at going really far, but Waldo did leg to state in FX (which seems tougher than the NX competition in general, but that's just me), so that has to say something. And I also think Rachel Yang from SM will have a shot at finalling, considering she semi'ed last year.

EDIT: Sorry for the edit, but I also realized that Kevin Ye's been up there in the NX competition and I think he semi'ed at Berkeley, and got 5th at Logan.

NX:
1. Evan Larson (Bellarmine) is a virtual lock for first place. He finaled as a FRESHMAN, took 2nd as a sophomore, and won it last year, so that's just about guaranteed.
Other finalists:
Taman Narayan (Leland) has finished second to Larson innumerable times. He won nationals in Impromptu, so he's a legit speaker for sure. I see him somewhere in finals, though I'm not sure how high.
Oscar Wang (San Marino) is a remarkable speaker as well, the only one to final in both Impromptu and Extemp at Berkeley. He took 1st in Impromptu, and, as mentioned, won the final round of Extemp but took 2nd. He's only a junior, so he has next year, but he's definitely ready to challenge Evan and Taman this year, and will probably be the favorite next year.
Maria Theophanous (Miramonte) took 5th in the state last year, and semifinaled(?) at Berkeley.
Arjun Srinivasan (Bellarmine) and Amode Tembhekar (Leland) are some other legit NXers who semi-finaled last year and could go to finals this year. But as always, extemp is full of surprises.

FX (in no particular order)
Will Rafey (defending state champion)
Hinh Tran (Berkeley finalist)
Nabeel Zewail (Gbrx finalist, Berkeley semifinalist)
Jacob Baker (Gbrx semifinalist, Berkeley quarterfinalist)
Albert Lin
Shahryar Abbasi (Berkeley finalist)
Ditto my other comment about how unpredictable extemp is. I also noticed that both these predictions may have a NorCal bias, so feel free to chew me out:bawling: or add to the list of legit speakers.

Impromptu (random predictions)
Aparna Ramanan (Leland) took 3rd in the State last year and is probably a finalist again this year. Simon Huang (Leland) is pretty strong as well, having taken 4th in the state last year. Simon, however, has been shaky this year. Safeena Mecklai (Mira Loma?) took 5th in the state in Impromptu last year, and 2nd at Berkeley (to Oscar, who's doing NX), so she'll do well again. Additionally, Bellarmine freshman James Thomas (Berkeley quarterfinalist) has defeated both Aparna and Simon during the year, so he's a dark horse who could perform remarkably well.

Coleton - Very funny. He definitely has his good jokes and also has pretty good characters.
Ankur - The cleanest pops I have ever seen. Has the funniest joke I've ever seen in a piece. Only problem is, he gets really nervous and rushes through his piece in big rounds. Only a sophomore though. Look out for him in years to come.

Hmmm. I am a novice interper BUT i have gone to ALOT of rounds at Standford, Berkley and the past GGSA State Quals.
I must say as amazing as the people you all have listed there are alot of new shows from GGSA league.

Coleton Schmitto (JR)- He is very good in my opinion, solid characters, funny, will definitly sem's and depending on his sem's he may final. his piece was confusing a lot at times because he tends to go a little fast but other than that if u can keep up its perfect! (we already know!)

Neelam (SENR-not sure about last name)-Shes doing Charlie and Chocolate Factory Most likely will sems but not final. its a clean and rlly cute but i've seen better interps. She does these things with her eyebrows that get annoying at some times but overall has alot of talents. I dont think shes been to any leagues so it was cool seeing her for the first time

Zoe Peherterson (SENR)-Charlie and Chocolate Factory- Saw this girl in two rounds. Defintly sems material except you could tell for a fact she wasnt memorized as it was different each round (and for the fact she goes to my school!)The piece is pretty hillarious and is very mommy liked. her pops arnt as clean as other competitors but she still has some talent! go zoe!

Jordon Mosche- (SENR)Hamlet II AMAZING! he is hillarious! Deffintly FINAL solid characters, - he recently just came out in HI this year. his main event was congress and has been to nats with in congress but this year he is going in HI. pretty tough guy to beat. pops arnt good tho but his voices distract you because its soo funny! He has gone straight ones in the past of finals round in League but then at league 3 he was beat out by Zoe and the girl below. He also got First at nat quals. Its appealing to both parent and student judges

Needa Hefzi- (pretty sure senior but my friend say shes a soph) Ruthless- I saw this girl at stanford finals- was defentily not memorized. quartered at berkley- probably still not memrozied. saw her at statequals. WOW. this girl CLEANED up her act! characters are solid. the piece looks like it has been worked on and polished. Now after i heard about this piece and how it finaled at nats and took first i decided to watch it. Her interpitation is pretty different so thats cool how she didnt knock it off unlike other compeitiors from Berkley

Zach Rice- (Soph) comming attraction- this piece is SOOOO funny and the guy who does it is pretty cute! his characters are solid and really entertaing. the only thing is is that the humor is kid funny and he does this rap scene that judges may not like but i think is amazing! pops are SOOOO CLEAN deng this guy is so fast! Lots of characters so you can see he has a ton of talent.

I would think that Karen Thai would do well again this year, if she decided to go in OA. I also think that Arcadia will do well. I believe that Arcadia placed 1st and 2nd at quals (Ray Chao and Christine Shen maybe?)

I agree with everyone of your evaluations except Zoe, Neelam, and Needa

I think Zoe and needa really aren't and shouldn't final at state or even semi -final for that matter, I talked to Zoe and Needa and they both think each other's pieces suck, and they're both right....I watched their sems at nat quals and both were horrendous

Neelam on the other hand could very well final at state

But the fact is Zoe is very mommy liked. and her characters are likable.
Needa is clean though and her characters are very insane with the facials.
Piece wise I think zoe could of done a better cutting-but she still pulls it off well and Needa's could of added alot more of physical humor
I will be shocked if both of them dont sems. You have to look at it at a judges view in my prespective. Most judges all they know about HI is that you do "funny voices" and different characters. and Zoe and Needa defintly have the category filled.
Neelam though I guess could final depending on her sems round. Compared to Phantom Toll Booth (who i think should win state....) she isnt as good.
Good luck to All!!!
(p.s what do you meen they thought both of there pieces sucked? Cause I have talked to both before and they never said anything like that.....)

yes that's it...it is absolutely awful...i mean the fact that it beat out shadowbox is ridiculous....but watevs they'll probably get powned at state and yeah there's been a lot of talk about them copying hte truongs duo of wizard of oz from last year...there's like 3 or 4 distinct parts in there actually

I know this is kinda old, but I want to get it off my chest (oh and btw this is Jon from Jon and Jason Mulan)...

I'm not here to defend our duo, because I know its far from being god status, but you guys have to understand that my partner and I were extremely, extremely shocked as was everyone that we made finals let alone made state. We are so thankful and blessed that we were so lucky to have done so well, and know that luck was definitely on our side.

for "stealing the twins" part, we kinda idolize the twins and my partner (little jason) has watched their duo no joke a gagillion times on youtube and I guess it kind of was engrained in our heads. We did not mean to steal anything, and some parts just were perfect for the roles. Personally I didnt even know we were jacking so much stuff, you guys helped me open our eyes. THe last thing we want to do is get ranked last because the judge thinks we're plagarising.

All and all, thanks for the kind words and critiques and we're going to work super hard the few weeks before state so we don't get "powned" . If we break quarters, we'll be super happy. If not, then too bad, we'll still be extremely grateful for being so lucky to be able to go to state as novices.

Oh and btw we're not going to nats (thank god) because our school doesn't participate in them.

Cheers :D

I really don't want this to be in offense but have you been to State before because the judges are alot different then league judges...Zoe, is alright with characters and needa seems to be way over the top which is a good thing but with the screechy little girl it just becomes way too much. Needa also has none of her own humor in it, its basically the peice, so not that much humor or interpretation...I will agree that Phantom Tolbooth should be state champ.

haha no offence takenbut my dear friend.......have you ever seen a final round of HI at state? It is deff not always the most HUMOROUS. take the girl who got third or w.e and semed or quartered at nats. She did matilda....nothing funny at alll but she was so clean and the characters were very distinct that she did well. it may not win you state but deff will get you far. now for the judges.. if you are aware of this...but alot of schools dont have judges so they are desperate and take random people. like i know last year from my school 6 judges came who had never ever judged a tournament b4.......or even know what speech is....lol so trust me the judging there is very similar. Sort of like Glenbrookes if you went to that?- Its a very big tournament so you will have some graduated old comeptitors and also some parents who well dont know what they are doing
oh you watched sems/prelims at the ggsa natqualifiers? dude did you see a piece(HI) called Boeing or something? About airplanes? aka the duo partner i think of Alice and Wonderland? hillarious! it was amazing. he qualed. and then oh my i saw this piece called Annie. completly ruined the movie for me. I hate it when that happens! :(

I really hope Phantom wins state. Ive seen the others everyone keeps talking about and I think hers is amazing. the other ones such as ryan aka ant farm is good (seems to be copied from the nats 6th place person a couple yrs back.......*cough cough*) but Phantom keeps her piece original and i commend her on that! :)

haha I agree...but the final round judging at state last year was completely legitimate...some bad pieces made it into final round but that was because of prelims and semis...I watched finals of Nat Quals with my dad and I saw that kid do bowing, I think (spl???) it was pretty funny...he had good presence in the room...he came in late and was kinda sweaty and out of breath lol...he couldn't have beaten neelam or moshe though....please elaborate on what you didn't like about Annie.

I'm pretty sure that Ryan was not at Glenbrooks last year. Coast Forensic League's first league tournament usually conflicts with Glenbrooks, however, for some reason, this was the first year that the league tournament was on a different weekend, enabling Bellarmine to attend Glenbrooks.

Second of all, their cuttings are not the same. I don't know if you have seen Ryan's piece recently, but it is definitely a different cutting, although I will agree, there are similarities, but none big enough to accuse him of "stealing" John's piece.

whats even more presumptuous is that you assume I have never held a conversation with him....which I have....It was the content of his conversation and general attitude towards other competitors and demeanor involving a lack of respect for the spirit of competition...so you find that it is actually you who is judging a comment without really dissecting it first

Err idk its jsut like i know some people dont look at it this way but alot about HI is judged on peformance and i.e how you present yourself. She looked sloppy and makeup was smeared down. Now another thing (AND I KNOW PEOPLE WILL START YELLING AT ME FOR IT) is that girls...welll girls just shouldnt rap in there pieces....unless they can pull it off VERY cleanly.. i meen the girl was obviously a freshman and it looked like her first HI. She has potentintal to be rlly good. Btw she had a beautiful singing voice she should of hit a very high note at one point to show off her talent.

guys-

ryan did not copy anything. only time he saw anyone else doing ant farm: final round of berkeley last year.
and ryan doesn't do the same cut. some parts are the same, but seriously, it's just because those happen to be the funniest skits. he interprets it WAY differently.
ward had way more subtle humor & characters than ryan.
two very different styles of interp.

i vote we stop talking about this, since it reaaaaally doesn't have anything to do with states predictions! (and seriously, it doesn't matter..... hahahaa)

Sure
HI: the first is REALLY good, the second is good, the last two (including mine) are just ok.
"Laughing Wild"-Ginen Cartena-Monroe HS
"Science Fair"-Amaris Olguin-Monroe HS
"The Bo Show"-Danielle Wilson-Granada Hills HS
"The World and Mr. Chicken"-Brandon Batham-Burbank HS

OPP: All are amazing except for the last one from Hart. It was just ok.
"Randomly Selected"-Sana Jahani-Monroe HS
"Two Hearts Overseas"-Garrett Cervetto-Canyon HS
"The Telegram"-Lauren Tyni-Granada Hills HS
"Being Bi"-Ian Suri-Monroe HS
"The Nanny and I"-Laurel Masamitsu-Hart HS

OI: Just going to name the one who was the best, and she is AMAZING
"Gay Rights March: Urvashi Vaid"-Cynthia Lapos-Canyon HS

TI: Another amazing one from our league, all i can remember
"Imaginary Friends"-Rachel Wing-Monroe HS

Congress: The first two are really good
Priya Rajan
Gegam Petrosyan
Camille Saucier
Adam Rabinowitz

And those were the only ones that really stood out this year

Since CA is such a big state for speech, i would love to see like staggered final rounds the way NFL does it. For instance, if there were two rounds on friday instead of 1 and then round 3/semis on saturday. That way all sunday could be devoted final rounds.

From So Cal (SD) watch out for:

- Julie Brown ("AirHeart")
- Nick Nguyen ("Disotriented")
- Nate Howard (I don't remember the name)

These are the three (out of five) OPP qualifiers from our league that I have seen, and I think all of them have a good chance of breaking. Especially, watch out for Nate... his novice year he got 12th(?) in OPP, and last year he was state champ in OI. :)

I agree with the wtfs LOL. So here are my adjusted final round predictions:

Wizard of Hip
Pete
Shadow Box
Jungle Book
Evil Dead
Freak the Mighty
Therac 25

another adjustment since Therac 25 isn't going to state, I would put Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Logan in there since it did well at squals or perhaps Alice in Wonderland which also did well at quals....

TMNT - Final round energy, since the people in it are so small it feels very kid like for some reason...humor might not translate well...will definitely semi...still very funny...amazing tech

Alice in Wonderland - Got better since state quals...they were amazing at nat quals...piece is still not a very good choice...performed well...beat out Freak the Mighty for Nats and I think it beat Hercules at Nat quals but Im not sure

Rylan Schaeffer (Mountain View); as annoying as he is, he's certainly persuasive for judges (finalist at Berkeley and a bunch of others that I don't recall), and he should place in the very top, unless he happens to get PO ganked by DeLuca and Bhandari like he did at Cal :P.

Tanay Kothari is also a spot of new talent, pulling off a first place win at state quals, and a tough break getting 1st alternate at nat quals (he competed in senate in which he was only topped by Schaeffer and another person who semi-final'd previously at nats...).

Who qualled in HI to state from the Fullerton league?

Can anyone, realistically, see Ryan Vasquez being beaten? Yes, the counter argument is that he was beaten at Glenbrooks and didn't even make finals, but he has changed so much since then, winning every single tournament other than Glenbrooks, and picket-fencing the Berkeley final round.

Madeleine is good too and I really hope she gets 2nd, but I can't see her beating Ryan.

And her BF, Evan is good too, but has always been in Ryan's shadow.

I think it will be a clear 1,2,3 at state and it will all go to CFL! Yeah!! Of course, I'm biased!

NX:
1. Evan Larson (Bellarmine) is a virtual lock for first place. He finaled as a FRESHMAN, so that's just about guaranteed.
Other finalists:
Taman Narayan (Leland) has finished second to Larson innumerable times. He won nationals in Impromptu, so he's a legit speaker for sure. I see him in finals.
Oscar Wang (San Marino) is a remarkable speaker as well, the only one to final in both Impromptu and Extemp at Berkeley. He took 1st in Impromptu, and, as mentioned, won the final round of Extemp but took 2nd. He's only a junior, so he has next year, but he's definitely ready to challenge Evan and Taman this year.
Maria Theophanous (Miramonte) took 5th in the state last year, and semifinaled(?) at Berkeley.
Arjun Srinivasan (Bellarmine) and Amode Tembhekar (Leland) are some other legit NXers who semi-finaled last year and could go to finals this year. But as always, extemp is full of surprises.

FX (in no particular order)
Will Rafey (defending state champion)
Hinh Tran (Berkeley finalist)
Nabeel Zewail (Gbrx finalist, Berkeley semifinalist)
Jacob Baker (Gbrx semifinalist, Berkeley quarterfinalist)
Albert Lin
Shahryar Abbasi (Berkeley finalist)
Ditto my other comment about how unpredictable extemp is. I also noticed that both these predictions may have a NorCal bias, so feel free to chew me out:bawling: or add to the list of legit speakers.

Impromptu (random predictions)
Aparna Ramanan (Leland) took 3rd in the State last year and is probably a finalist again this year. Simon Huang (Leland) is pretty strong as well, having done well in the past.

This post is SO old, but I figured I should clarify anyway. Safeena Mecklai (Hey, that's me! Haha :)) is from Mira Loma for surrre. I'm defffinitely excited for states this year.

well like i said i was just arguing them beating wizard of hip and pete that's all....after that they definitely have a chance at 3rd or 4th...just not top 2 like some predicted as a possibility...hope they don't get snubbed like last year though and don't even final

Absolutely. Totally agree with you.

I think somebody else mentioned extempers favored to take the top at state, some I recall of the top of my head:

-Evan Larson (NX)
-Oscar Wang (NX)
-Taman Narayan
-Will Rafey (FX)
-Aparna Ramanam? (impromptu?)
-Jake Baker (FX)

Also add Remi Sun - Bellarmine

So in National Extemp the people I see as potential final-rounders are:
Evan Larson (defending champ)
Taman Narayan (national champ in Impromptu, semifinalist last year)
Oscar Wang (Berkeley runner-up)
Maria Theophanous (finalist last year)
Amode Tembhekar (semis last year, Berkeley finals this year)

Semifinalists:
Arjun Srinivasan (semis last year)
Anthony Paranzino (Berkeley semifinals)
Rachel Yang (semifinalist last year, not sure if she's competing this year though...)
Hao Tran (semis last year but having an off-year)
Fritz Pielstick (semis last year)
Sarah Bradley (semis last year, but is she going?)
Daniel Merritt (semis last year, maybe competing in another event though)
Remi Sun (broke at Berkeley last year, has defeated some people on this list)

Foreign extemp looks more open for surprises:
Finals:
Will Rafey (defending champ)
Jake Baker (Berkeley quarterfinals)
Waldo Yan (Berkeley quarters/semis, semis last year)
Hinh Tran (Berkeley finals, 8th @ state last year so he just missed finals)
Albert Lin (Berkeley finalist, semis at state last year)
Oscar Huang (Berkeley semis)

Other than that, I'm really not sure which other foreign extempers have a track record at state.

tk447
04-17-2009, 04:22 PM
Impromptu:
Safeena Mecklai (Berkeley runner-up, 5th last year)
Simon Huang (4th last year)
Aparna Ramanan (3rd last year)

This event, as always, is unpredictable. These are the only legit contenders I can think of.

i don't know what all this hype is about jungle book...i mean they kill it in our league and they're definitely good and will final but i don't see them competing with wizard of hip, pete, and hercules....i see them finaling but not top 2 or 3 like some are predicitng

1. wizard of hip changed ALOT at berkley their script violated ALOT so its changed and its not as good.
2. hercules isnt going. they had ALOT of violations with their script. they ddint even go to state quals. They were gonna get disqualified at Nat quals but then the guy was nice and let them off easy.
3. pete is alright

just wanted to clear tht up

I could see Evil Dead, Shadowbox, and Jungle Book all surpassing Pete, but I don't know if any of them can surpass Wizard of Hip.

And as far as oratory, I could see these in finals:

Tina Nguyen
Daniel Weingarten
Vivian Lam
Sagar Vijay
Kyle ? (Bellarmine)
and two others.

In my personal opinion, I don't see jungle book or Evil Dead surpassing Pete at all (both are great pieces), but after seeing Shadow box at Berkeley finals I think that if anyone, it would be Shadowbox that could maybe surpass Pete. But since the 2 duos are so different it would be up to who the judges like better.

vivian lam is going in expos not oratory....i would probably replace her with sofie garden or vanessa menchaca...and tina is obviously odds on favorite to win it...after that the only name ive seen in other places is sofie garden and menchaca adn leonid liu from gab (final at berkeley) is going in oratory as well....and i know daniel weingarten has been doing well through out the year so he'll probably be there as well

Anybody want to do projected ranking for oratory? Bball? you seem to know a lot about oratory i'll give you the first shot ahha

DUO:
what parts did wizard hip change? if htat is the case I see pete surpassing them and taking first. i think a lot of people are comparing pete too much to what they were last year instead of just looking at them for what they are this year....yes their piece may not be as good as last year but it's still really good...and i just don't see evil dead or jungle book surpassing them...whereas shadowbox (a drama) could depending on judges like bennyblackbear says

First, as far as oratory, this is how i predict the final round to be:

1. Tina Nguyen - Gabrielino
2. Sagar Vijay - Bellarmine
3. Christine Huu - Logan
4. Daniel Weingarten - San Marino
5. Kyle Vandenburg - Bellarmine
6. Leonid Liu - Gabrielino

As far as duo, I agree with you about its unfair to judge the Truongs against what they were last year, but looking at the piece alone this year, I still think they are the best out there. I do not see them winning. I can see Wizard of Hip winning and Pete taking 2nd or 3rd, maybe even 4th. I'm sure all pieces have changed a lot since we have all last seen them and its sure to be interesting.
I'm not gonna project rankings, but this is how I project the final round to be:

Pough/Williams - Logan - "Wizard of Hip"
Truong/Truong - San Marino - "Pete"
Chau/Coco - Gabrielino - "Evil Dead the Musical"
Shah/Shakir - Leland - "The Jungle Book"
Medina/Ricco - Schurr "Shadowbox"
Restaino/Weber - Fullerton - "Rinse the Blood Off my Toga"
Hodge/Black - Logan - "Soul Solution"

How about some other predictions?

PoFo:
Hinh Tran and Shahryar Abbasi from Monte Vista will reach semis at least (like they did last year). They semi'd (maybe finaled...I forgot) at Berkeley this year, so they look like favorites.
Annie Yi and her partner (I think she changed partners) from Leland should be in semis as well. They went far at Berkeley as well.

Parli:
Ayushi Roy (Stanford champion in both extemps) and Aparna Ramanan (state finalist in Impromptu) from Leland are good spontaneous speakers who could go very far. Oscar Wang (2nd at Berkeley in extemp) and Nabeel Zewail (Glenbrooks finalist in extemp) from San Marino are very talented extempers, but I haven't seen them debate Parli before. They have a good chance nevertheless. However, based on track record, Evan Larson (Parli champion two years ago along with his smorgasbord of other achievements) and Anthony Paranzino (Parli top speaker at Logan) from Bellarmine look really solid and are probably favorites. All six of these are extraordinary speakers who've accomplished remarkable things, so there's really no telling what the specific ranks will be.

Pete (MY 3rd) was VERY clean and deserved the 3. Jungle Book was fantastic. However, carried HEAVILY by one performer (similar to earlier comments regarding shadowbox). Toga was good, slightly obnoxious. Monday, girls were good; WAY overmatched in this final. Alice, clean; but not clean enough with that top 4

3. wizard of hip - not nearly as good as they were in berkeley finals
4. pete - something in this piece feels way too forced.
5. starting monday - a little out of place in the round, but solid nonetheless
6. rinse the blood off my toga- not as crude as they were at MLK, but I agree that it was a it annoying

Hey, guys! I was a visitor, supporting Iain Lampert, our Cleveland Impromptu guy for this year. He was new, so we're proud of his ranking.

Now, I'm really biased, but I was watching Impromptu for the whole time (except when I saw a few HIs and a Duo--the Wizards of Hip was awesome, as was the Phantom Tollbooth), and I was really disappointed with the winner. She used the same speech with minor alterations at least twice. I don't understand it--are canned speeches looked upon with favor at States? Is that considered the normal thing to do? Second place and fourth only re-used their intros, not the whole speech. Third and sixth used similar examples, but that was it. Fifth and Seventh were entirely fresh.

I don't quite understand it--the way it seemed to flow, it was more of an Interp round than an Impromptu one.

The Alice that went to Finals was the guy-girl duo. I felt that the girl-girl duo was a bit more polished than the one that went to finals, although the girls did get about 8th place.

As for Duo finals, I was shocked that "Pete" earned 4th place. I was expecting top 2 for sure. Junglebook was definitely entertaining, but I felt that the twins were snubbed.

Kudos to Wizard of Hip- we went against them and Pete in Semi-Finals, along with Alice in Wonderland (girl-girl duo). Hilarious performance, indeed!

Evil Dead and Shadowbox, which both made semis, should have been in finals in my opinion over Alice in Wonderland and over Starting Monday.

Here are my thoughts on the final round, in the order I would have ranked it:

1. Freak the Mighty - Like someone said earlier, the perfect combo of humor and drama. It was so touching. The bigger guy had such good dramatic acting that it sent shivers down my spine. I was sitting next to a judge and she was crying.

2. Wizard of Hip - Absolutely HILARIOUS! They completely command rooms they are in. I felt though, that something was off with their performance in final round. Seemed a bit low energy? They had a lot of cool beats. The whole basketball scene with the father was extremely funny.

3. Jungle Book - Another good combination of humor and drama. The drama was not as solid as the one in Freak the Mighty, but the piece was extremely solid nonetheless. Great tech. The bigger of the partners played all of his characters very well and distinctly. The smaller partner portrayed his only character EXACTLY the way I would picture a Jungle boy to be like. His weak growling was HILARIOUS!!

4. Pete - I believe that they are very good performers. They do great things with the piece, its just I feel that the piece does so well because they are twins. For instance, in the final round, before they even began performing, when they were just walking up, people were saying "awh they are so cute!" I just feel like this greatly contributes to their success. They did, however, own the final round in terms of audience reaction, but I just felt that something substantial was missing from the piece. The drama was forced. The fight was absolutely SHOW-STOPPING!

5. Rinse the Blood Off My Toga - Really funny. I liked the whole chariot tech they used as well as the swivel chair and the fighting. The fight scene at the beginning was phenomenal. A lot of the jokes, however, got repetitive and annoying.

6. Alice - I believe that this was a good piece, just it became a victim of a tired crowd. The room was hot and they were 6th speaker. They got very little reaction. This was a good piece and definitely semis-worthy but I believed there were some duos in semis that could have been better suited for finals.

7. Starting Monday - The piece started very slowly and I couldnt understand some of the things they were saying. The story line was a bit confusing. I thought they were the same character at the beginning. Towards the end though the piece really picked up and I thought their acting was great. It was a good dramatic piece but I felt as though Shadow Box would be a better dramatic for the final round.

I'm really curious to see how both "Alice in Wonderland's" were like. Were they narration-based, character-based? I'd really like to know how they set up the plot and the 10 minutes they had with it..? Humorous and/or dramatic? Ending?

Congratulations to anyone here who placed at states! :D
