So, I didn't see any recent threads of this sort of discussion and was moderately surprised...
I'll try to keep you all updated on a medal count along with any sort of awesome Olympic news that I see or hear.
Also, please discuss anything you find that is noteworthy relating to the Olympics.
So, I'll start off with the current medal count. The count will go in order of total medals. In the case of a tie for total medals the ranks will then go by medal denomination (gold beats silver, silver beats bronze). In the case of a further tie, we'll go alphabetically. And we'll just go with the top 10.
As of today, August 11, 2008 at 4:00 EST
1. China - 9G, 3S, 2B = 14
2. United States - 3G, 4S, 5B = 12
3. S. Korea - 4G, 4S = 8
4. Italy - 3G, 3S, 2B = 8
5. Russia - 4S, 2B = 6
6. Australia - 2G, 3B = 5
7. France - 3S, 2 B = 5
8. Japan - 2G, 2B = 4
9. N. Korea - 1S, 3B = 4
10. Great Britain - 2G, 1B = 3
In other news... did anybody else catch the 4x100m Relay last night in the water cube? Michael Phelps and co. did it again. Possibly one of the most amazing swim races I've ever seen.
Discussion?

The Relay was INTENSE. The U.S. team did absolutely fantastically, I was blown away.
Did anyone catch the U.S. men's beach volleyball match against the underdog Latvian team? I believe they're calling it one of the biggest beach volleyball upsets in Olympics history. But I must say, those Latvians put up quite a match.

I saw a few minutes of the beach volleyball match. Unfortunately, I already knew the outcome.
I need like a special Olympics spoiler alert before people announce any sort of results... haha.

You stole what was going to be my topic of the week :( . Hope you don't mind me moving it.
Anyway...I'm probably the only one who watched it, but Women's Team archery was amazing. I don't really follow Olympic trends so I had no idea how much Korea dominates in archery. I was hoping for an Italian upset, being of Italian descent, but Korea just wiped the floor with the Italian team. 24 arrows fired, not a single one missed the gold.
I'm not a huge sports fan, but I love watching the Olympics. There's that same mind-blowing intensity in everything. I don't think there's ever really a boring moment.

I knew what you meant after a moment, but when the words "special" and "Olympics" are right next to each other, my immediate reaction was one of confusion.

You're hilarious.
And it's completely okay that you moved the topic... I'm honored that I got to it before you did... haha!

Michael Phelps is the studliest, though.
The men's gymnastics team is doing surprisingly well, too!
But my spotlight will remain on Phelps. He has become my hero.

This just in -- Michael Phelps eats an insane amount of food a day. Apparently, he has to have an intake of 8,000-10,000 calories per day. He just swims, eats, sleeps, and cuddles his dog. I want his life.
Also just in -- Michael Phelps is part dolphin. Story at 11.

Yeah, NBC is ridiculously obsessed with him. If you've noticed, on the corner of the screen, there's occasionally a countdown to Phelps' next race. T-MINUS 32 MINUTES UNTIL MICHAEL PHELPS PWNS COMPETITION AGAIN OH MY GOD BREAK OUT THE MARCHING BAND AND CONFETTI.
Seriously, if he wasn't so awesome, I'd be annoyed. But he is so I'm not.

exactly. I think it's funny. Every time I hear his name, I come running to the screen.
But he's not the only one. I hear "American Gymnastics" I come running too.
Or "American swimmers."
Or "Women's Beach Volleyball." Okay, I'll have to apologize for this one... I've been accused of being "such a guy" on this one... and I'll admit it.
But it's just the Olympics overall. I love the Olympics.
In other news... what do you guys think about the Chinese faking the fireworks and replacing the girl who sang the national anthem with a lip syncer?

Poor little Yang Wossherface is going to be mentally plagued for the rest of her life for that one. Yes, she's Chinese so she claims it was "an honor for China to use my voice," but c'mon. That poor kid.
The fireworks I can understand. I mean, they're fireworks for crying out loud. But there's nothing more than just superficiality when it comes down to those two little girls.
