I figure there should be a place where new and former captains can share their insights on the best ways to keep their team going. Feel free to describe what the role of student captain is like in your school and if you are/were a leader on your speech team, please share any advice you have for others.

How are captains selected in your school (appointed by coach, voted by members, etc.)? Do you have captains for each individual event? Were you just appointed captain and don't know what the **** you're doing?... Don't worry help is on the way!

Forum. Gossip. Vent. Rant! :)

We have Co-Captains
generally one junior and one senior

They are appointed by the coaches with input from the team.
No we do not have one per event.

They are leaders, they assist with peer coaching, the assist with contacting students, they assist with nfl point entry, they assist with daily radio announments, and tend to be somewhat asst. coaches with novice.

This year we had four captains (count 'em, FOUR). That wasn't the best idea we've ever had. For the upcoming year we're thinking we may just have a "debate" captain and a "speech/interp" captain, instead.

I'm a potential speech captain, so we'll see where that goes.

Otherwise, we have individual squad leaders for each event that conduct practices and coach novices, as well as varsity competitors. It'd be much more effective if our novices were more willing to participate. I'm open to any suggestions on how to encourage novice participation.
