There are many of us who are not fortunate enough to be at the party in Austin (a.k.a. AFA). Can someone post some breaks? Please?

Duo Finals went:

1st Place: Slam Poetry Play by Reggie Cabico -- Emambu Atabong & Elijah Misigaro
2nd Place: "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe" -- Ben Pyle & Maggie Waid
3rd Place: "The Boondocks" -- Saeed Jones & Ben Unanaowo
4th Place: "eHarmonize.com" -- Natalie Sintek & Joele Denis
5th Place: "The Big Gay Sketch Show" -- Alyssa Reid & Roger Willis
6th Place: "The Great American Trailer Park Musical" -- Daniel Johnson & Adam Swanson

...I'm pretty sure that's right. It was a GOOD round.

I was initially a little shocked that Virginia Wolfe placed as high as it did, but in retrospect their blocking was really quite remarkable (to say nothing of how hard it must have been to cut). I'm normally not that impressed by blocking (see Slam Poetry Play, which was pretty much all blocking), but theirs was quite subtle and effective.

DI finals:

Julia Kolsrud - 1st - "700 Sundays" by Billy Crystal

Emambu Atabong - 3rd - i forget the name but it was a gorgeous piece about a woman who is sloly losing her memory.
Joele Denis - 4th - "Andy" by Danny Hoch

I actually didn't care for hers that much. I thought the cutting rambled and that the performance was a bit uneven. I would have ranked her lower, but as my own results from the tournament demonstrate: I don't really know what judges at AFA want.

I think The Lady With All The Answers should have scored much higher. She was pretty emotional at the end of it (which AFA judges tend to be jerks about), and the early part of the cutting rambled a bit, but I thought it was some of the best acting in the round.*

* asterisk because, as I am always repeating, Interp isn't acting. That said, I found her performance had a subtlety that was lacking from some of the others in the room.

The Dog Logs was awesome. It's a shame he had to take 6th, because it was really quite good, just a bit too easily dismissed compared to some of the other selections in the round.

700 Sundays was beautifully performed, although the material is a bit
"schticky" for my tastes. In an excellent round, where any of the top 3 or 4 competitors could have taken it, she was an excellent choice.

I should say that I also loved Jesus Valles' piece. Here is a textbook example of how a strong performance combined with a killer introduction (brechtian portrayal of character) can make a piece that might at first be "just another prison story" suddenly so important and impossible to dismiss.

It was an excellent round-- probably the best final I watched at AFA.
(Although I did see all but two of the ADs in finals of ADS, and I am sure that was a ridiculous round as well.

Just my two cents.

(Obligatory apologies for anyone inadvertently offended by this commentary. I want to emphasize again what a great round it was, and to try and steer clear of the negative commenting that goes on a whole lot in the HS forums of this site. Please feel free to disagree with me if you saw the round or contribute to the discussion)

Poetry Finals:

Clarence Ball - 1st - ? but I am sure it was phenomenal because he got a standing ovation.

Clarence's poetry essentially studies Black History and the stigma associated with slavery. His main argument is that the way Black History is typically taught, slavery is the "beginning" point. He says there is so much more to Black history than what is taught. He relates Black history to Moses and Jesus, which is a such beautiful point in his program, and other figures of history. He argues that if young blacks are only aware of the more recent history of slavery and not aware of the much broader and ancient history, then they will never know where they came from and thus can never really know where they're going. Our history helps to determine our future. Blacks must break free from the historical stigma of slavery and define themselves more with their glorious history spanning several thousand years instead of a mere few hundred.

It was amazing and incredibly powerful. It was such an honor to be a part of that moment.

lol, thats great. don't know who that is, but that's great.

Larry Schnoor is essentially the director of the AFA-NIET and NFA. He's the man who makes everything in the college speech world happen. Ultimately, he's god... from Minnesota-Mankato.
