Well: From my section this is who I WANT, not a prediction: Sam Crittenden, Emily Beach, Will Miller.
I would LOVE to see Jerry Howard take State in DI. He has the most incredible DI ever..so yeah.
5. Any shout outs for good luck!!!
Everyone from my sectional! Also to Peter Lundquist, good luck with state, I'm looking fwd to seeing some kind of "showdown" (haha not really a speech term) between you, Crittenden, Schmidt, and anyone else I forgot...

An interesting outcome of sectionals is the amount of ties for third place, particularly out of the Olympia sectional (indicating either too much exceptional stuff or a battle for mediocrity after the top rank) and across all sectionals in original comedy. There will be 23 competitors in OC at state, so there were be some out of the same sectional hitting each other in prelims.
Looks like everyone was battling for the scraps in OC at Olympia. Nice going Amber.

Thanks Ryan! Congrats to the kids from your team, and good luck next year! Seriously, you better own some Northern IL LP!
1. What events did you and your team advance/qualify?
We're sending:
Kelly Silay (HI): "The Day I Traded My Dad For Two Goldfish"
Peter Lundquist (IS): "Yes, I Know There's a Space For Titles In Impromptu, I Will Not Write 'Untitled,' Please Stop Making Jokes About This"
Erin Devine (PR): "My Boyfriend's Back And There's Gonna Be Laundry"
Iman Rahim (RS): "I'm Secretly In Love With Natalie Chan"
Priya Nakra (SOS): "We Should Commit... eh, never mind"
Alex Moorman (VR): "A Program on Self-Worth"
2. Where are you staying?
Across the street! Whoo! I live literally across 95th St. from Neuqua, so if you want you can come on over Friday night and we can have a crazy speech party.
3. Who are the top seeds from your Sectional advancing?
Um... it's the DGS sectional, so it's generally scary all around. But for the sake of providing a real answer to this question: Kyle Akerman. (Who is apparently using illegal pieces in Verse by the way... is he going to get this cleared up?)
4. What are your predictions about specific competitors making it to final
round?
Laurel Stankus completely OWNED me in Impromptu yesterday. I was sick and out of it and running on two hours' sleep (after three and a half solid hours of swing dancing the night before), but she was so good she woke me up and scared me to death. Other than that, I'll keep quiet because I don't want to be eating crow in a few days.
5. Any shout outs for good luck!!!
Everyone on FOL! ROCK AND ROLL EVERYONE!
Our biggest surprise was Matt Socha and Allison Kasbee not making it in DDA. We were pretty sad... they won at DGS and didn't even get into the Sectional finals

What about the verse program is illegal? And why didn't anyone challenge it? I know 'someone' from that sectional challenged a piece at a different sectional.

yeah, i've heard nothing but good things about matt & allison from luke and kristin. i've never seen them (after a whole day of verse, you couldn't pay me to go to a dda final), but based on what i've heard i was shocked.
oh, and what illegal poems is kyle using? i know he changed his program for state series, so I would be very surprised if he changed his program specifically for state series and there would still be publication issues.

One of his poems (I think it's called "Kite" but I'm not sure) is apparently (again I'm not sure of this, people have just told me this) not from a printed, published source; it's from a video. I don't know if anyone's challenging it, but my school isn't going to bother. I know that this happens occasionally, like a couple years back when Waubonsie Valley's DDA was disqualified a few days after Regionals when someone found out that they had just transcribed the movie it was taken from since the script was not publicly available. I don't know how this will work out, but I'm kind of curious to see how, if at all, it will develop.

A. I love your radio title.
B. Don't worry, you and Laurel with both destroy at state series.
C. I'm hardcore having a speech party at your house on friday.
With regards to Socha and Kasbee, I think they might have just gotten the bad luck of the draw. For one, the sectional was crazy hard, but their piece was different in its style. It was very, very natural, and the performance didn't leave you in tears, but the context and the reality of the piece did. Most judges loved it, but I could see why it could have just been a bit too stylistically different for a few judges taste. Sad that such a great duet got knocked out at sectionals, though.

Oh. Weird. I'm pretty sure he's in the clear with that one because that appears on Def Poetry Jam and also its printed on his website. I don't know if it would be fine if it were only one, but I know that in the piece I put together for sectionals I used songs by the Hold Steady and those were legit because they were "published" or "publically available" or whatever on the CDs and that the words themselves are available from theholdsteady.com or the little booklets that come with CDs.

Yeah, about that Stanford Sectional
One of the most funny things I have seen in a while. But I have to say I was a little uppidy. ( I know , uppidy is an amazing word) I couldd't stop laughing every time Mr. Deloria said "and we had a _____ way tie for third" but, my team got a few qualifiers that way so I'm not complaining.

Amber- I'd be careful. That was a loaded sectional so blaming it on judging isn't very fair. I wonder which of the three that did advance you think shouldn't have? I look at two of those names and say to myself- there are two kids that have been winning in the suburbs every week.
Obviously, it would have been nice to see Mark and Chris get out, but just because they didn't doesn't mean the judges were bad.
One final thing for everyone to consider- I'm sure there are judges who will be at state that read these posts. Think first and play nice.

On the playing nice front, the post quoted above and its prequel are grossly inappropriate. I hope you will reconsider and apologize (I encourage you to consult with your coach), particularly since you admit you are uninformed and only repeating an anonymous rumor.
Ask yourself: who are these anonymous "people" disparaging a competitor, what might he/she/their personal agendas be, and why are you being used as a front? Repeating a rumor is as hurtful as starting one.
On the merits, the idea that Rives -- a n nationally recognized slam poet -- is not sufficiently published is pure silliness.
I invite you back on the high road, where the air is clean and accomplishments are free from taint. Forensics is about stretching and supporting each other, not seeking to derail others' performances.

umm...okay?
Sorry. I was NOT saying that the people who made it out at those sectionals were not deserving of their placements by any means. All I was saying is that I was sad seeing that mark and chris didn't advance. I'm sorry for expressing that...?
I'm sorry for saying that there must have been bad judges...that was wrong of me. It was said out of frustration. I appologize for that illinispeech....i'm sorry if that offended anyone. The question was brought up on the boards about any surprises at sectionals so i shared something that shocked me..

Mark and Chris are both wonderful performers and so are the kids who advanced. The bottom line is, we have no idea how the actual performance went. People have changed things at this point in the season and that may play into as well. Just seems to me we spend too much time saying things that can be viewed as putting down someone else's effort. I remember reading on here last year how someone didn't belong in OC finals. It wasn't fair then and I don't think it's fair now.
Feelings in forensics will run strong, but my advice to one and all is to focus on the positives as much as possible and don't put yourself in the hole by saying something you might regret later.
Good luck to everyone this weekend.

Um alright. I respect your opinion and honestly I agree with you in saying that we need to focus more on the positives. However I don't see why you needed to bring up what happened last year on the boards about my OC. That was unnecessary...
In no way did I degrade anyone such did that last year. I specifically said I wasn't in any way saying the people who advanced didn't deserve it. I would NEVER take away from somebody's accomplishments...
I just want you to know that I am not a bad guy out to upset people. I love speech more than anything and I think anyone who is involved in it is wonderful. I'm upset that you think I'm an ***. I've even been looking back and reading posts that you've made recently about being surprised that certain people didn't make it out of regionals/etc...And you were not degrading people...and neither was I. 3. There are lots of strong performers coming from our sectional, but...
4. I don't want to jinx anybody with my predictions.
5. Good luck to EVERYONE. A big part of state is luck of the draw...it all depends on who is judging and which prelim round you are in.

I'm very happy that this has been put to bed, and that a fine individual is not faced with competing under a cloud. You all have enough to deal with without dialing up the emotional pressure. Thank you.
You all have so much to offer, and I wish for each of you great success (this has nothing to do with medalling and everything to do with sportsmanship) at State. When you look back over the years, you will not savor pieces of tin, but the commaraderie and frienships earned. Enjoy!!!!!

Okay, there has been way too much drama on FOL.
I think that everyone who made it to State, who made sectional finals, made it to sectionals, broke regional finals, were chosen for their school's regional team, or who have supported the members of their schools regional team deserve a big hug because they are all amazing, awesome, talented people who went out or are planning to end their season with a bang. =]

Okay, I know everyone's really afraid of any more possibly-offensive, less-than-ultra-sunny posts, but can you do that? As I understand it, the rule is that you can replace someone on a PIR, but you can't add competitors between tournaments. Has this changed?

lol well, let's just say the girl she is replacing made a big mistake. But she's young...she'll learn. It wasn't just like a "umm i dont like you, we're replacing you!" There was a reason...haha. And she understands.

I'm going to ask this again, why is the state final judge list still not posted? Beyond the fact that the hired judges were posted in November last year, but the IHSA has assigned all of the prelims and finals yesterday.
Anyone from Neuqua care to share?

yup. Amber summed it up quite nicely.
I didn't think I was going to be in the PIR,
they just needed someone to replace her.
I don't know WHY the judges haven't been posted yet.
HOLY COW. Everyone's dying to know.

I don't believe that anyone from Neuqua has anything to do with the judging. That is something that should have been determined by the advisory committee and the state speech committee. The weird thing about a school hosting is that they have nothing to do with the nuts and bolts of the tournament. They provide the facilities, food and awards ceremony. It's a weird process. I do think that by not posting this information they are setting themselves up for questions about who is judging and why they don't want people to know who has been hired.

Just to clarify, the advisory committee has nothing to do with the state judges. That's all IHSA. Coach judges, on the other hand, are assigned by the state committee, which is made up of the sectional managers and a few other "at large" coaches.

True, the host does not have a say. However, they will have the programs and should be able to see the judges.
Regardless, the state tournament committee met Sunday to assign judges. Therefore, what is the big secret? And yes, it would be helpful to know who is judging.

I think it's kind of a good thing that judges haven't been posted yet. It's not like they don't have judges assigned or anything, it's just not public is all. I've always thought that it was weirded that they posted that ahead of time - it's not out of the question that people might change their piece to accommodate a certain judge's taste, which certainly gives them a competitive advantage just because they happened to have had, or had a teammate, coach, or friend, who has had that judge before.

Perhaps, but there is also something to be said for transparency. I think that is more in everyone's interest and advantage.

What exactly then does the advisory committee do? Are they running things in Susie's absence? And if the advisory committee doesn't have input on state judges, then who does? The IHSA surely doesn't know all of these people who are hired.
It's interesting and troubling to me at the same time.

Libertyville advanced in 1 event ; )
OC - John Oleksinski (myself)
Where are we staying...
We live an hour away. No hotel for me. : (
Top Schools Out of Our Section:
Wheaton Warrenville South, Glenbrook South, Warren, Wheaton North
Unfortunately I've only seen a small fraction of my competition....So I can't really make any guesses as to who will advance to finals. However, it will be refreshing seeing some new creative pieces! 23 OC's! That's too crazy!
Good luck to everyone! This is my first time at state...so I'm positively pumped!

What peices are Kyle doing, and who are they by?

I totally get to go to state and support my team (and watch the competition of course)
I've already decided what rounds I'm going to watch, and I cannot wait.

This issue has been cleared up and there's no doubt about the legitimacy of his program. Off the top of my head I know he's doing "Kite" by Rives, "Human the Death Dance" by Buddy Wakefield. Both are published and universally accessible.

As Mr. Jenkins said, the state tournament committee is in charge of assigning judges. That committee is made up of the six sectional tournament managers (head coaches,) which changes every year (except for the fact that some schools seem to always host a regional/sectional) and a few at-large members (when the 'experienced' people are not hosting a sectional that year.) So when people say "the IHSA" they are probably referring to this committee, which includes Susie for oversight.
Of course it is good to have people with experience running the tournament, but having the same few people every year does breed questions of conspiracy.
The advisory committee, which Mr. Jenkins has elaborated in a previous thread, handles questions about rule changes and other issues at the annual meeting in April.
The state tournament hosts are more in charge of making sure the catering arrives on time and the rooms are open.
Don't worry, cliques don't end after high school. =)

An important job, to be sure, but surely less responsibility than having our pictures in every program makes it seem. :D

Adam, but it is volunteer time and greatly appreciated by the various coaches in IL. I look forward to seeing you at State. I believe that I am scheduled to judge Prelim Round 1 and then a 4pm Final Round. I am sure there will be some down time. Good luck to you and your team!
