For northern California we had one tournament (Lynbrook) which experimented this event. I don't think it worked out too well and probably won't be seeing it at all in California.

I've heard rumors from Nova students that last year may have been the last year for "extemp duo" as it was unorganized and too hard to run.

I couldn't imagine this being run at any serious national tournaments. It's too sloppy, and you can never get a, how would you say..."quality" duo out of it. The two times I did it, I placed both times...once for having a scene with Bill Clinton in a litterbox...and one with Santa Claus getting "Pootie Tang" for Christmas...and they weren't half as funny as they sound. :) It's a nice dream...but I don't think Duo Improv could ever be taken seriously on a national level. Or any level for that matter. :)

'Tis a pity.

improv duo is a state event in kentucky!!!...you see we're not old fashioned...we're just backwards...but seriously, if you have people who do it consistently it is the best event ever...its good stuff

I think Duet Improv has to be one of the funnest events of all time... Personally, I'm not too great at it, but I loooooove watching it. There's two fellas 'round here by the name of Felder and Barrientes... They are the funniest mo' fo's of all time in Duet Improv... Oh my sweet, sweet God, they are good... Ha ha, funny stuff.

And Jssipi... Your avatar is truly pimptastic. Simply pimptacular my friend.

i do believe that the scenes would be sloppy if you've got duo teams that only compete in the event once a year, but here in ky we've got people who have staked everything on improv duo...if fact we've got this one kid who's awesome at improv and has done it for 3 years at just about everytourney..its just like HI DI or duo interp, of course its going to be sloppy if you don't do it often, but once you get it down its amazing.

Eh, success really just relies on partner chemistry, quick thinking, and tech competency. It's as simple as that.

of course those things come into play, but you can't expect to have all of those things especially partner chemistry and tech competency if you've only competed in improv one time....i'm telling you teams who consistently compete in improv duo are generally better than those who just try it out once for fun..now of course there are exceptions to the rule just as in any event, there may be those who just take to the event naturally and can beat others without any practice/effort but i'm just saying as a general rule.

Not nesecarily, while practice may make you better, I think a teams ability to improvise plays a greater part. There is this one tourney in PA where they have it, and from what I have heard its the team that never really competed that wins.

ok improv is just like any other event...the ability to improvise is developed just like anyother acting/speaking/interping skill...people actually practice. You think the guy's off Who's Line is it anyway just happened to be great improvers..NOT they developed their skill and practiced...now just like anything else some are going to have natural ability but in generic terms those who improv often are going to have more success than anyone else...and you've got to take it into perspective..in penn improv apparently isn't taken that seriously..here in kentucky its one of the bigger events and there are people who start improving as freshman...your telling me that some random team that's never competed before is going to beat a team thats been together for 4 years YEA RIGHT....

No no no...natural ability is a big thing. There are national and world compititions for improv. 5-7 people on a team. I would know, ::openly brags:: in 2001, me and my team won 1st in the state of california as well as 1st in the world finals (48 states, 14 countries). I saw these teams and you could tell who had natural talent and who just practiced a lot. Top 6 teams had a **** of a lot of natural talent. Thats what its all about.

My duo partner last year, Kyle Kimball was state champion and finalist 2 years in a row in CA states impromptu. He wouldnt warm up or practice, when our coach made him practice in class he would give a rediculousely out there one, usually hillariousely funny. So even with out practice he got 1st in the state...improv is a lot about natural talent.

oh sure natural talent is a HUGE thing in any event...but for those of us w/out the natural improv talent practice can help you improve...you won't win 1st w/out natural talent but you can still break finals.

I'll use myself as an example...i don't have a whole lot of natural improv talent but i worked at it(its not my first or second event though)..my first year i didn't break at all but this year i'm breaking almost every tourney so practice can pay off...but you guys are right natural talent counts for alot.

**** right...

Although improv is a skill that must be worked on, it also requires some already existing basic talent to base improvement off of...

yea but thats the same with any other event...maybe i'm just stupid and like to practice improv

Well... isn't the point of Improv. for it not to be practiced and like off the top of your head and what not... but then again thats just me....
haha Zech and I dont practice...

i mean practice doing improv...like going through the event over and over using different prompts

I started doing improv this year with an insanely talented and hilarious partner, and let me tell you, practice is key. Just as with every other event in Speech, you need to do it often so you can figure out exactly what each person can do in terms of characters, voices, physical and verbal comedy, and other elements. You cannot just show up and expect to break into finals, because that's just ridiculous and risky. Sure, you may have natural talent, but what if during your first round of competition you discovered you had no chemistry with your partner? What if it ended up to where one partner had to carry the other through the whole scene? See, you have to figure out your strengths and weaknesses beforehand in order to be a truly great improv team. I think my partner and I have done that, and as a result we know what will make the other person laugh, what works and what does not, and how to read a judge and decide what kind of humor (bizarre, non-controversial) they would enjoy the most. Practice makes perfect, people, and anyone who says otherwise is out of their ever loving gourd. (end rant)

i think that about says it.

My partner and I got 3rd place and 5th place the only two times we ever did Duet Improv together. And we didn't practice at all. Heck, I usually made up about half the skit as we went along.

We probably WOULD'VE been much better if we did practice, though. Meh.
