I've only seen one Final Round of OC this year, but here's some that I enjoy (sure, I may be a little biased towards my school, but, hey, they do well):
Colin Delaney (Wheaton North)
Topic: Jesus' Bar Mitzvah
Colin is one of the best performers I've ever seen over my career on Speech. Quirky, clear characters; precise pops; great storylines; and, best of all, an incredible sense of humor. He placed 2nd in State his sophomore year, and 5th his junior year. This year, I'm pulling for him to win. His OC this year focuses on an adolescent Jesus, who is nearing his Bar Mitzvah. The main crisis in his OC is about Jesus' father, God, not being able to come to his celebration. With the help of his Bosnian party planner, who proposes the theme of the party to be "Gold, Fashion Sense, and Fur," Jesus throws a party that, unexpectedly, counts the devil as one of its guests...
If you get a chance to see Colin, take it. He's phenomenal.
Mark Campbell (Glenbard West)
Topic: The Grim Reaper's Retirement
One of Mark's strongest aspects is his energy. His down-to-earth performances exude charming characters, great blocking, and, most of all, his lively performance style. This year, his OC focuses on the Grim Reaper going into retirement and his replacement, who just happens to be Mickey Mouse. As the Grim Reaper spends his retirement in Disneyland, Mickey begins to go a little overboard, turning into a frenzied, killing machine. Generally, he and Colin make finals, usually the two of them taking 1st and 2nd. So, if you see Colin, you're bound to see Mark.
Katie Batten (Wheaton North)
Title (only title I know): "A Job to Die For"
I've been friends with Katie since middle school, and she's one of the funniest people I've ever met. One of the first things you'll notice about Katie's performance is her undeniable awkwardness (which she uses to her advantage). Her OC is about a teenager who goes from odd job to odd job. Starting out in a babysitting position, Katie soon finds herself locked in a closet on the phone with a 9-1-1 operator, while the kids threaten to play "Brain Surgeon" on Katie. Soon after, she goes to a convalescent center full of, well, men who tend to love their Viagra. Seeing the trouble in this situation, Katie finds her final job at an animal shelter. Hilarity ensues when she goes on a search for one of the shelter's prized chinchillas in a dark room. Katie generally breaks Finals, and I very much so enjoy seeing her perform. She probably won't be our entry to State (Colin will), but she holds her own in this male-dominated event. Also, she's had to fight to get out of Colin's (and fellow OC-er Alex DeCamp, who made it to Nats in HI last year) shadow, and certainly does that in her unmistakeable, awkward style.
Ryan Cashman (Downers Grove South)
Topic: Iron Chef - Celebrity Chef Edition
One of the more underrated OC-ers out there, Ryan's OC focuses on an Iron Chef competition between Emeril Lagasse, Rachel Ray, and a crazed Chinese chef. Moderated by an intoxicated Julia Child, the competition's goal is a "garlic butter cake," which each chef tries to create. One of Cashman's strengths is his incredible characters, notably Julia. Expect DGS to send Justin Matkovich as their OC entry for State, but don't count Ryan out as your average, run-of-the-mill OC. His OC is a definite crowd-pleaser.
Other OC-ers that have done considerably well this season:
Ethan Wallace (Wheaton Warrenville South)
Justin Matkovich (Downers Grove South)
Jonathan Sokolow (Warren)
Christy Gaylord (Glenbard West)
Jack Kehoe (Wheaton North)
Jeff Herold (Neuqua Valley)
Alex DeCamp (Wheaton North)
Aaron Fuss (Glenbrook South)
Chris McCarthy (Warren)
Connie Oshana (Elk Grove)
Peter Lindsey (DeKalb)
Matt Hudak (DeKalb)
Hope this helps!
