dont do the program on crying, thats too focused for a topic. think of the theme, is the theme crying? or is it a low self esteem? always being picked on? once you broaden your topic, youll be able to find more poems. try that.

i thought about making a program about how "real men dont cry."

good, but maybe broaden that more to "the definition of a real man". then you can do a whole slew of poems. by making your topic much more focused with just "crying", youll have to do much much more work to get your program to the point where others with a little broader topics will be.

Matt Cavenaugh did a program called The Male Feminist my junior year at CFLs.

No offense to matt, but it wasa pretty ****ty program, especially considering how good that theme could have been.

I always thought that topic area gave you great leeway to explore a topic that's absolutely fascinating--especially in an event like poetry that's typically looked at as a girl's event.

exactly, so dont limit yourself. give yourself room to really explore your topic.

I'm with the person above me. Broaden your topic. Having 8 mins of poems that all talk about crying is nice, but what's the point? Crying is good? Crying is bad? Sometimes people cry? Somebody in my area is doing a program with the poem you mentioned + Wussy Boy, and his program is about gender roles.
