I prefer Ubuntu Linux, but for simplicity's sake I use Windows most of the time. I'm not ready to make the total switch, but I will be exploring Linux more as I embark on my computer science major next year.

NFox

WOW! I thought we'd have to wait like a month for anyone to say they prefer Linux...I was wrong.

Personally I have two Macs. My main one is a Powerbook running Mac OS X, and my newest one is an iMac that runs both Mac OS X and Windows XP Professional. So Even though I moved to a more "Mainstream" OS than Linux, I still can't rid of Billy Gates' OS from ****.

I'm sure Linux will serve you well in Comp. Sci. In fact I know someone who had to get Linux just to complete some of his Comp. Sci. courses.

who in the **** would still use DOS in this day and age???

Aelfric5578

People who love the simplicity of the command line and need it to run very old software. At a local college, the engineering lab still uses Windows 3.1 to interface with a very old but still very useful machine. Older hardware might require an older OS.

NFox

I mostly threw DOS in for fun, but I know some guys who if they could would be using DOS right now. I used to be pretty proficient at it as a little geek, erm, kid. Now I've forgotten it all.

Palm OS was the BS OS I decided to throw in. No one in their right mind should want to use Palm OS, it is so outdated. and can only be used on about 3 devices, all smaller than a moleskine notebook.

I use Palm regularly, but don't enjoy it. I am a three OS kinda guy: Mac, Palm, Windows. OO yeah, geek cred.

They are incredible. What color did you get? I only ask because the white ones seem to be discoloring at a very rapid rate. If that is the case, Steve Jobs will buy you a brand new computer soon enough.

Is this your first mac? If so, what do you think of the switch so far? If this isn't your first Mac, then there is no need to comment on switches of any kind.

Nick Fox

PS: I'm writing this at my iMac...so pretty

Well, the white ones are vanishing because the black (which I have) is an upgrade. As opposed to 60 GB (white option 1) and just a drive that reads DVDs and CDs, I have (black option) 80 GB of memory and a superdrive that both reads and writes...White option 2 comes with 60 GB and a superdrive. I would rather the extra memory for safety.

The switch was easy--everyone will soon have a mac. It will replace PC. They are easy to use, 1 in. thick (notebooks...), and have incredible graphics for film, photography, music, or movies.

It is difficult, at first, but give me a few weeks and I will be a pro...with some help from other mac users.

NFox

The switch took me two weeks of straight use, so you'll be just fine. If you have any questions feel free to PM me, I'll help in any way I can. One not: Learn every keyboard shortcut your mind can handle. It will make you 200 times more productive.

I got really excited when I upgraded my original desktop from 3.1 to 3.11.

I love my Powerbook. I've returned home recently to spend some time on the custom-built PC I made a few years ago only to realize how much it sucks now. My Mac p\/\/|\|z y0 (0U(|-|!

PS: GET APPLECARE! I regret not getting it now since I'm having a few hardware problems that could be easily fixed under Applecare but that I'm having to fight for without it.

My best friend Tyler makes a lot of really neat little apps for you Mac users out there.

Especially you developers and such.

And there's Browsejour for all you who just wish to get a bit more out of Bonjour.

But yeah, check it out, he just released BuildFactory this morning and it's pretty sweet, pretty sweet.

And check out his whoring of me, if you get bored (and can find it).

One recent cool mod I saw was a Mac Mini/ Delorean/ Movie Theater.

<!---Rant for the uninitiated
The problem is, windows has taught you to over think things. Macs, especially Mac OS X, is the single most intuitive operating system I have ever found. You should really give Mac another chance, but don't give up. The first few days I had mine were frustrating because I knew nothing. Then I discovered the wonder of the "Command" button and have never looked back since.

At the very least, Apple updates its OS on time, as opposed to Microsoft Windoze which was supposed to be updated in 2003, and is now going to be updated (at the earliest) in early to mid-2007. Chief officials at M$ even admitted that they took many of the ideas for Windows Vista from Mac OS X. What does it tell you that Microsoft is stealing from Apple? It tells me they recognize the inherent "betterness" of Mac OS X. I just can wait for Mac OS X Leopard to come out...

Rant over---!>

NFox

Because Windows sold it soul long ago, by making agreements with computer manufacturers. They gave them their OS for free initially. Since it was free, the manufacturers used it. That gave M$ their market share, then since everyone had Windows there was a higher demand for it in the future. So, the manufacturers went back to Microsoft, then found out they had to pay for it...they knew that was where their market was so they paid for it. Apple maintains full control of both their hardware and software making them more solid machines.

Remember Market share does not equal quality. How many times have you found a "no name" band that is better than most signed artists out there. The same is true with Apple/Mac.

Now look what Microsoft's majority market share has me doing:

TO EVERYONE WHO OWNS A MACBOOK:

How do you clean it? I've noticed it's been collecting dirt rather nicely. I don't want to just run a washcloth over it...do it?

CaptainBee
06-29-2006, 05:06 PM
Didn't yours come with a (useless till now) instructions booklet?

After consulting the rarely-needed User's Guide, I recommend unplugging, turning it off, taking out the battery, and wiping it down with a soft, damp, and lint-less cloth.

But it says not to spray liquid onto the computer/screen, and to be careful about the openings (der?).

So go for it.

Does yours have a rough or smooth screen, Macpeople?

NFox
06-29-2006, 05:35 PM
For the screen, I recommend a clean sock with a miniscule amount of water on it...as a matter of fact that's what I use on the palm rest too. Just make sure it is unplugged and off when you do this and the sock isn't too wet. Then just let it dry.

That was the poor man's solution...the real way to clean it is with a lintless cloth...but who has that?

If the dirt is serious around the palm rest, you might be able to get a brand new one: http://www.engadget.com/2006/06/28/apple-starting-to-swap-out-those-dirty-macbooks/

Have you contacted hotmail support for forgotten password or other reason locked? They will generally assist rectifying the problem. Just a thought since it is the one your friends have. Good luck. Otherwise, consider starting a new HOTMAIL OR GMAIL account and e-mail all of your friends with your Change of address for the new year.....

Aelfric5578
07-06-2006, 01:36 PM
Anyone with an account originally got 50 invitations to give away. That was how GMail was spread. I got my account from a one of my friends from school. A few months later, they gave us another 50 even though I had never used the original supply. Now I think we even have more than 100, even though that's the number that shows up. The few times that I have given out an invitation, the number is back up to 100 the next day.
