I and a few other competitors I know started as juniors. Generally, around here the most common career path is two years in declamation and two years in oratory. At the same time, I know several people, one is on my team, who started as sophomores and others who started as freshmen. Oratory is one of the few categories without a real learning curve, so it doesn't really matter when you start.

I started at the end of my senior year, and i hugely regret it. After doing six years of Interp, picking up Oratory was the greateast thing i ever did. I LOVE ORATORY. I highly suggest everyone try it, because once you give it a chance, you will fall in love with it.

Na, don't think so. It is fun initially. I'll give you that, but if you do your oratory every weekend, the flame dies quickly. Extemp is where it is at. It's a different experience every time.
I will admit though, some weekends, when you can just feel your speech, it can be a **** of a good time. That is why I love my speech this year. It is so easy to get into.

Dave, you're so weird! "Extemp is where it's at" ha. Congrats on 2 first places this past weekend, man. I hope you dominate in Dallas.
I did interp for three years and then did a speech for all of the teachers in my area and it was amazing. My coach then walked up to me afterwards and said, "I'm making you do Oratory this year." That was the best thing that happened to me in my forensics career. I didn't know that I was a orator until then. I'm very happy that we finally found where I was supposed to be. I loved my speech, but I loved speaking even more.

I started it my sophmore year (this year) as part of my coach's plot to stick me in as many events as humanly possible. It's my favorite event, and I'm glad I started as a sophmore- I'd have been too intimidated as a freshman, but I've still got plenty of time to do it, enjoy doing it, and do as well as I can at it.
