Hey, I'm new to the whole Speech thing, (SOOO Great!! Wish I had found it before my junior year tough :( )
Anyway, I have a dilemma.
I'm and going into my second local tounament next week, doing this HI peice called "Santaland Diaries" by David Sedaris, about working as a Macy's elf, and at one point he uses sign language when talking to deaf children ("Sorry, but Santa has a tumor in his head the size of an olive") Great line, but only one problem: I don't know sign language...
So what should I do? Try to fake it or cut it? Would it be offensive to make up sign language?

Hey Babe!
I think it would rock if you learned how to sign it-I know a couple of kids at school who know sign language who might be able to show you.

Well...
This year for Duo, I am doing Wish Fulfillment. If you don't know this piece, it is unique in that the whole selection is the same scene repeated of a son revealing his homosexuality to his father, but with drastically various results. Anyway, we came up with the idea of doing a scene all in sign language and when he breaks the big line, I go "what?" in a humorous way. We love it, and everyone else so far has too. Try it out, we actually learned it, there's a website that is very beneficial for those attempting to learn.

If you did some fake sign language mixed with some real sign language (and made it obvious, of coruse), I think that would do best.

Oh theatrix, someone should give you a medal or something. You do so much research for people you don't even know when you could be like "look up websites with sign language."

It is an occupational hazard working in information systems (library services), being a coach, and a mom.
I am glad to have been helpful!
Hope you have a great week ahead!
