View Full Version : Best Drama Ever...?

What was the best drama you've ever seen? What do you like in a drama? I know, for me at least, I like dramas about people. I really don't like it when something Awful happens to a character. I mean, it's fine if your character gets cancer, or somethine "huge", but I like to see (and perform) more inner conflict-type DI's. Some DI's that changed my outlook on Dramatic Interpretation:
Shane Allen's DI two years ago.
Laine Peterson's Drama two years ago.
Shane Zeigler's dramatic prose last year. I think it was from "The Burn Journals"
Jaqueline McAndrews's DI last year, "Pig".
Beautiful stuff.

I place Mike Frawley's rendition of Scaramouche Jones, and Pierre Clark's (2003 champ) Life is so Good among the best, easily.

Jacqueline McAndrews's "Pig" was AMAZING. I was able to be in semi and final rounds with her, and each time I saw the piece it brought me chills. Her character is so real and relatable, and I like the humor in the beginning.

She is the epitamy of what I want my internal conflict to look like. you can actually feel the emotional pain. I actually hit her at Harvard and Nat Quals, though they were good rounds, she knocked me out, but whatev.

I don't think you're correct here.
Cole Grissom finaled with Mr. Charles (Currently from Palm Beach) in 2002.
The 1998 National Champion was Michael Urie (Mark on Ugly Betty) performing Confessions of a Nightingale from Plano Senior. I still vividly remember watching his nationals final tape. It is purely amazing to watching how he commands the stage, controls the audience, and embodies Williams' character.
Interestingly, Michael was one of the DI finals judges at Nats this year. He was at the tournament working on his independent film about High School Speech Tournaments, I think.

Child of Satan, Child of God - Kelly Bahlke 2005-2006
Pedro and Me - Gabe Gonzalez 2006-2007
Both won or placed top 3 at just about every large tournament during the year (Harvard, Glenbrooks, Emory, Crestian, Yale, ASU, etc) and were unfortunately and unfairly cheated out of Nationals. Under the previously used Ranking system on this site, they were both ranked 1st in their respective DI years. Nonetheless, both were chilling and moving and left you in awe at the end. Phenominal pieces.

Wait, how was Gabe cheated out of nationals? He went in HI and got to quarters I think.

Gabe wasn't cheated out of DI for nationals. He competed in HI and placed 2nd.

That would be 2007-2008. He was referring to the DI performed last year, as he said 2006-2007.

I actually talked to Gabe, and people from his district, about that.
Last year he told me he wanted to do his DI at Nationals more than his HI (Captain Crow's Teeth). In my district you can't double enter, so I was confused. He told me he didn't qualify with his DI at Nat Quals. I looked through his records on here and saw he was top 3, as previously mentioned, at almost every NATIONAL tournament he went to. Kids from his district told me that he does well nationally, but locally there is a lot of jealousy because he always wins and is so talented, so they rank him down.

I think a few of my personal favorite DIs recently have been ... DI not personal performance of one ...
The Glory Box
End of the Rainbow
Seventh Child
Lady Day at Emerson Bar and Grill
Falling Man
Island of Hope
talk about pieces not individual performances -- especially when not being constructive.

Based on what I've seen and read- here are my selections
Males:
Mormon Boy
Harvey Milk
Falling Man
Time of Terror
Blackout
Confession of a Nightingale(sp?)
Female:
Property known as Garland
Intimate Terrorism
Tea at Five
Island of Hope
Gloria!
Just my opinions. I think each piece/performance lends itself to something unique.

"Cul-de-sac" by Daniel MacIvor
"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by David Eggers
"Confessions of a Mormon Boy" by Stephen Falles
I actually performed all of these, not that I think I did a great job performing them or anything, but I became intensely connected to the material. All of these pieces will hold a little spot in my heart, because the literature is so strong.

i dont know if anyone saw the piece im about to mention but i saw it in an quarter and believed that it was going to top half the final. its title has something to do with glass, like "pressed up against the glass" or something like that and this chick plays an old modern art collector and talks about her father dying on the titanic...?

I believe the title of the piece is "Woman Before a Glass." The old art collector is Peggy Guggenheim.
It may have been FOL's own Justine Lassar, I know that was her DI piece this year.
The piece is available here: http://www.dramatists.com/cgi-bin/db/single.asp?key=3632.

I just watched that video, and omg, I knew I'd seen him perform but then I realised I totally hit him--I wanna say it was at Wake, but I'm not sure--could've been Emory. Weird coincidence since I only go to like 2 national tournaments a year, but omg. Talented much?
