I'm pretty sure it's John, because I remember at UPenn and Villager, people would laugh. I think he's a direct descendant, because they said "John C. Calhoun."
1st - Kevin Troy - Eagan High School MN
Whoa, big frickin' surprise.

Concerning Mr. Kendler, I believe he has already won Impromptu at Nats.

Yes, Kendler did - I believe two years ago, after falling out of extemp in Quarters(?).
Congrats Mr. Troy and Mr. Kendler. I was happy to see Troy take the trifecta, but I was thrilled to see Ron Kendler win that round.

Kevin didn't win the final round, no. But the placings are based on rounds previous to finals, as well as finals themselves. Cumulatives.

Yea, the Kubish Bowl goes to the final round winner in IX (as is the Professor's Plate in USX and I believe the Patrick Henry Bowl in OO?) and that winner is declared "the National Champion of the final round."
This doesn't hold as much weight as winning the tournament cumulatively b/c that is the highest honor being the overall national champion in the respective event. However, it is kind of cool that in USX, IX, and OO the final round winner is recognized b/c round 13 for a lot of speakers is the biggest round of their life @ NFL. I guess someone could see it like college football where the prestigious AP declares a national champion and the coaches poll might give a split for a different decision (although the AP's choice is usually preferred).
I just got the information about Kendler's final round win from victorybriefs and didn't notice it on this board. I also said he won his second national title b/c in 2003 he won Impromptu after being eliminated in the octo-final round of USX.
Nevertheless, that final round was VERY, VERY close between Troy, Kendler, and Cheesewright. I think that split was something like Kender-35, Troy-36, and Cheesewright-37. Another fun note about this is that it's very rare for the winner of IX to win the final round. Off the top of my head I can only recall Gilbert Lee (2000) and Ishaana Rambachan (2004) doing it.
Congrats to again to Kevin for a dominating performance this year across the country (and for having some awesome consistency throughout the tournament having only picked up one rank below a 2 from rounds 7-12)and to Ron for winning round 13.

His name is definitely John C. Calhoun. He competes in my league. He also did OO a few times. His speech was about judging things based on names. In it he explains that he is in no way related to the southern secessionist.

Is he related to the UConn coach? 'Cause if he is, he is automatically cool

Indeed it was. There was actually a three way tie for the bowl, until tab decided to reinclude the top and bottom scores that are normally discarded.

Actually Viet Moneys, the tabulations for the final round awards in IX, USX, and OO include the ranks of ALL 11 judges w/o any drops across the board (which are put into calculation for the overall tournament). NFL does this to ensure that whoever wins the final round award wins on merits of all 11 judges.

To Those Who Saw Finals...
What were your impressions of Andrew Green (ended up 3rd). He's from KC and I saw him a few times when we competed at the same tourneys, and I was just wondering what you thought of his final performance.
He was the hefty guy.
I only saw green in the final round, and his casual informalisty surprised me. I myself am more of a conversational speaker than a polished one, so I can appreciate how that can be useful. Andrew I thought was too informal for his own good in finals, but I suspect a lot of that stemmed from nerves/pressure. His analysis was interesting, and his intro was quiantly pleasing, even if it didn't connect all that well with the speech.
I think the ability to succeed with a more informal speech decreases wiht the size of the audience and/or judge pool, so he probably was more successful earlier in the tournament. he also had some fluency issues in his cross-ex (does he do PF or LD? it reminded me of an LD cross-ex).
will he be back next year?

Green was a senior this year. To the best of my knowledge, I actually thought he did CX, but it's quite possible he does LD (by far the most popular debate in the Kansas City area, at least two years ago), or just does not participate in debate at all.
EDIT: Here (http://points.nflonline.org/Student.aspx?id=1049167) is his nflonline.org membership report. Yes, he has 2135 points (without nationals). He has more points than any other member of the NFL. Period.
Also, you can see from his report that he largely did CX debate, but apparently dabbled in LD for a tourney.

Green used a canned intro, used it in semis and finals. For that alone, I am upset he made it to finals. But in Semis and Finals, he seemed kind of nervous. The semis round I saw him in looked like he would not break to finals, but I guess his cumes helped him along.
I think there were two semi-finalists who deserved to be in there before St. George and Green. Both were excellent, but Dan Rauch and one other young man were better.

While I'm flattered, I was not at the top of my game and can see why NFL judges went with Green and Numbers (even if I fervently disagree) . As far as I'm concerned the fact that there were at least 4 totally solid speeches was definitely better than most years, so I'm not complaining ( too much). Thanks, Rauch

I have heard Green every year of his high school career. CX, the finals at nat quals where he qualified in Oratory his freshman year, more extemp rounds than I can remember, and finally this year in LD. He qualified for nationals every year. His junior year in CX. This year he was the top qualifier in LD. Please note that he rarely competed in LD. Given the number of rounds I heard, I cannot ever say I ever heard a 'canned' introduction. Finals at nationals is the top of ones career. Given that Andrew is the top points qualifier in the NFL, I would say that he is well rounded and the cumulative points prove he did an awesome job as did all of the finalists. Essentially the first 3 speakers were almost tied in the finals. Humm...
Kudos to a really great person. He earned the 3rd place he received at nationals.
BTW, I have been out of high school for almost 30 years and have continued judging and coaching in a volunteer role for most of them. Andrew is one of those rare individuals that I will remember as a great person, awesome speaker, and has a wonderful future ahead of him. And no, I am not from his school or his mom!
