I'm wondering if poetry finals were as amazing as I expected them to be. We had to leave early, but I made as far as round four and could not believe the talent. If the competitors were so good so early in the eliminations, I can only immagine what the finalists were like.

First place was Alexandria Barth. I was really happy she won. My team competes all the time with her team for top state. She is an awesome person, and I think the first national champion from Nebraska. Any thoughts on how you guys think the round was ranked?

Not to be mean but...

I thought Nathaniel Nguyen was the best by FAR!!!
I personally ranked Barth 6th. She was good but I did not think she was champion material.

By the way I was 7th and it sucks so bad but still congrats to all it was awesome competeing against you guys you guys rock.

I wish I would have been able to actually see the finals round so as to make a more cemented assertion as to who should have won. I know for a fact that Barth didn't win at state (I think she took fourth). But such is the case with Nationals. People who should have broken or won don't and on the flip side there are those who do extremely well who may not deserve it.

So.

Yay for not having any downs going into semis and then going eighteen seconds over time.

Thusly being disqualified.

BECAUSE I WENT FIRST AND DIDN'T GET ANY TIME SIGNALS!

Not to sound bitter, but I should've been in finals.

You cannot be "disqualified" for a time violation. Check the rules. But in a tough round, like, um, Semis at Nationals, fifteen seconds over is suicide. It's a prepared event. You should not be going fifteen seconds over. If you are really good, you'll last the whole tournament and it won't bite you until outrounds, which is apparently what happened to you. You were not "disqualified, however; the judges dropped you. Big difference. One is the cold, authoritative machinations of a governing body and the other is something that you should have been able to prevent.

Congrats for making it as far as you did. Semis at Nationals is no small feat.

Hey, loosen that collar there, Han.

I believe you when you say that Zech may not have been automatically disqualified just because he went over, but I think the real crappy part of this is WHY he went over, that being that he wasn't given timecards.

Now, while it is a prepared piece, that doesn't mean there isn't going to be some variation. In fact, it's pretty much guaranteed unless the performer is going to act like a complete robot. They need to react to the audience, as well as occaisionally improvise, if only mentally. I think your critique of Zech going over was a bit unfair, and that there was a bit of injustice for him.

Perhaps you are right. I have long thought that time signals in interp were like training wheels. At Nationals it should be "look Ma, no hands" time. But, I was a bit harsh, and for that I apologize.

Matt Ungar, short guy who did the Tim Burton selection only had 1 down. I really wish I could have seen him in finals.

"I'm really sorry about you not breaking, you were by far one of the best in the round. But we were forced to give you last, our hands were tied."

Just one.

"Marriage" by Gregory Corso.

"I'm really sorry about you not breaking, you were by far one of the best in the round. But we were forced to give you last, our hands were tied."

-One Of Zech's Semis Judges, At Breaks

Interpretation:

"You were very good, but it was a tough round. Had you not gone overtime, we would have been able to consider you for a higher score, but your time violation sort of made the decision for us."

I've been on both ends of this situation, as a competitor at Nationals and as a judge at Nationals. While there is no such thing as an "official" disqualification based on time, it is a virtual disqualification due to the nature of the event and the quality in the round.

Corso's Marriage is a wonderful piece.

I actually think it was "Exotic" Emilee. Could be wrong though-- it was a while ago.

I hit the girl that won twice in rounds three and four-- lucky for me I got the three in both those rounds.

*kicks life*

But yeah-- I know she was doing a mixed race peice. It was good though, she was also really nice. So-- yeah.
