DUDE thats awesome! We're gonna be in the same district, Jess. And plus, you've got Frawley and Edwards on your team.
P.S. did you get a scholarship for 4n6 there?
you know, i think it'd be nice to say which high school we're coming from, too. just for kicks. i'm coming from Bethlehem High in Bardstown, KY.

I <3 St. Joe's. They are fun people.
Im sad b/c I wont be able to do speech next year at all. I love it, but it's hurting me as an actor and I don't have time for it (which is why I havnt competed since fall semester).
But I'm sure I'll find a way to sneak out to a tournament or two.
how is speech hurting you as an actor?
Josiahzacks
05-01-2005, 08:34 PM
It's a long and complicated thing, but essentially speech left me with difficulty activating my body emotionally, and playing any character believably who didn't speak in a clear tone of voice.
Acting is about truth, and while speech is too, it works a bit differently.
This doesn't mean that if you want to be an actor, you should stop doing speech, I just reached the point where I'd work on a monologue in speech and in acting class, and my acting teacher would be like "wtf?"
speech can be very helpful (it teaches you script analysis pretty well), it can just be physically limiting.
lilmcd86
05-01-2005, 09:24 PM
i think i can also back him up in saying that speech is very active, just as theatre is. and it's hard to go to tournaments both semesters and get cast and go to class. you're trying to appease so many people at one time, and very few are willing to be cooperative and work with you. you're either committed, or you're not.
but again, it's not to say it cant' be done. every school is different. however, doing speech and anything else is a handful, lol.

word.
especially when that school is "the tisch"
well, i suppose where time is concerned i can understand it. but i still don't understand how it's...how did you say it? physically limiting? but oh well. each to his own, i suppose.

The majority of "acting" in forensics is from the waist up. You use your voice and your face to convey the story. In acting, you have to use your whole body naturally on a full space.
It's a matter of developing certain "forensic-y" physical habbits. Anyone who's ever done extemp, impromptu, or Oratory has their own system of gestures (whether they realize it or not), and these can get in the way of being natural on stage.
All these habbits are easy to get rid of, but as a first year acting student I found that actually doing speech while I tried to get it's mannerisms out of my body was counterproductive and limiting. That's all.
I'm not trying to say that speechies are bad actors or that speech makes you a bad actor, it can just give you some very bad habbits.

I'm a horrible actor, and I know it. Interp? No problem, I can do it all.

to all the new wky kids coming up, get ready for the best year of competition you've ever had. did i mention that everyone is totally chill on the college circuit? wky and bama ("wama") are total homies. so if you guys need anything, just let me know. western girls rock my socks. :D
yay! good to know it's gonna be fun. i'm pumped. absolutely psyched about it.
i haven't even been able to think about new material yet. i'm trying to get through this last uber-crunch of work the teachers have tossed on us. after that, i may be able to work on speech stuff. i wanted to come to camp this year and help out, but i'm thinking i'm gonna be in a play that conflicts. i'll just have to see.

From a soon to be former novice I am really excited that you all are already building up relationships with people on other teams this early, thats awesome! College Speech is great and soooo different from what I experienced in highschool, the major difference to me is that it really feels like a huge community and you will meet people on other teams that you "compete against" but its wierd how because you hang out with those people every weekend they end up becoming your friends. Take advantage of everything freshman year has to offer, I know I did and i love it now that i have people I chill with at ISU, WKY, Texas and dozens of other schools across the country. Trust me it rocks ***. Here's to looking forward to meeting some of you on the circuit next year!

Aw, speechie love! That's so exciting! I can't wait to meet all of you guys! We just had our "Speech Awards Supper" for our high school team. That really made me feel like I'm ready to move on to this next step in my life. AH! So excited!
AH! so scared!
kind of. i am a little bit nervous. not about competition and stuff, but just...the whole thing in general. life's been pretty good so far, and now i'm about to move on by myself, and it's a little frightening. and sad. but it'll still be fantastic fun, i'm sure, once i get there.
If you want to get anywhere in college forensics, hang around the West Point team. There's nothing more to say.

Lots of events.....
it's not that i think i'll be left totally in the dust, it's just that i know of three of you that are going to camp, and i would totally be going myself if not for this play. and i know you'll learn things and get a head start, and i won't be able to start until school starts. i'd love to get a jump start, but it's just not going to happen.

You soon to be WKU competitors shouldnt have to worry about anything. Youll have sufficent time to get you pieces together. For those of you that will be on scholarship you have to have five events (scary) not really just try to focus on interp and do improptu speaking trust me it's easier and a lot of fun in college and it's a quick event. Those of you that did highschool OO I would try to get my other events down first as writing the speech can be a bit of a longer process. Anywho if you have any question just ask
Oh by the way Im a James Logan High Alum and Ill be your team mate next year Ria and Ashley I was my freshmen yaer last fall so it kind of have a first hand experience. See ya at the camp
Ben
well, ashley, i appreciate the confidence. i'd still love to start working now, just because i want to. ah, well. i'm working on the play, so it's not like i'm totally without anything to do. still memorizing and characterizing. and tomorrow we're building the set! yay!
woohoo, another teammate! i'm so excited for next year. it's gonna be awesomeness!

ATrueSouthernBelle
06-16-2005, 06:36 PM
Ria, what play are you guys doing?
"bad seed." it's actually the play that i'm told the piece "ruthless" was taken from. a little girl kills whenever someone has something she wants, or threatens her in some way. i play the know-it-all landlady who lives upstairs. we go off-book next week, and it's showing the 7th-10th of july. i'm excited. i've gotten to meet several people, and it's just great.
ATrueSouthernBelle
06-17-2005, 05:16 AM
Oh! I've seen that movie; it really freaked me out. That girl really was ruthless.
i know. we've got this little ten-yr-old girl playing rhoda, and she's having so much fun. i'm really looking forward to the actual performances. it will be my first community theatre experience.

How much are tickets? I'll have to talk to my mom and see what we've got going on.
i don't know yet. the director hasn't told us. that could be b/c most of the cast does this each summer and knows already. but i'll ask him tomorrow. all i know is that you can't order advance tickets, but he said they never sell out. it's really small place, i love it.

Facebook is very entertaining! I could browse that thing for hours. :P
FYI- i had a really weird dream that all of you were in. I had a dream that like we finally all met, and we couldnt remember each others name so, we just used our usernames in conversation. for example " so lilmcd, how's your summer been so far?" " Oh not bad, Swodaem" it was kinda weird.

ok, now you guys have got me having weird speech dreams. i dreamed the other night that chewie and i were investigating something, and we hunted down jd to ask him questions about it. and in the dream i thought, "this would actually be kind of cool if we weren't investigating something serious."

honestly, jd, i don't rememer what you or chewie looked like. but i'm sure you looked just fine. i just remember us showing up at your doorstep and flashing badges like we were cops or something. it was weird.
why am I NOT IN ANY OF THESE DREAMS?
it's because you're so dreamy in real life, chad. we don't need to dream about you!
