I knew the posts about this would be flying up, so I thought I'd do it first. What are your predictions for the KHSSL State Tournament finals? I don't know much about some of the events, so I'll just write about what I know. (These are the top three and are in no particular order.)

Broadcasting
1.) Lauren Fibal (sp?), Lafayette
2.) Ashley Litsey, LaRue County (I hate to put myself up here, but I don't really know of anyone else.)

Declamation
1.) Brian Cass, KCD (He's done really well; I've got faith in him.)

Extemp
1.) Courtney Otto, KCD
2.) Brice Acree, LaRue County
3.) David Stroup, Danville

HI
1.) Mason Scisco, Danville

Poetry
1.) Mauricus Lofton, Danville
2.) Jimmy Houlihan, Central Hardin
3.) Ashley Litsey, LaRue County

Prose
1.) Mauricus Lofton, Danville
2.) Jimmy Houlihan, Central Hardin

Solo
1.) Jimmy Houlihan, Central Hardin

Storytelling
1.) Maria Wallace, Bethlehem (She's a consistent finalist, and I've got faith in her too; I know Mr. Lasure is working them to death.)

I'll update these later, guys.

Ok, just to chime in on Extemp:

I won't actually rank these. However, I figure Otto will sweep up. That's the only ranking that I'll contribute, though. These are, in my opinion, the major players:

Otto [KCD]*
Stroup [Danville]*
Reese [Scott County]*
Greenhaulgh [Boone County]*
Johnson [Graves County]*
Gallenstein [Boone County]
Allen [Bethlehem]
Ray [Graves County]
Copeland [Graves County]
Ailshire (if she goes) [Boone County]
Milburn (if she goes) [Danville]
Burke [Boone County]
Huot [Boone County]
Acree [LaRue County]

*Finalists:
--Courtney Otto: duh. She'll final, and probably win, hands down. This is her year for, well... everything.

--David Stroup: His record speaks for itself. He took third at KCFL and second at the KESDA Forum. If he doesn't break into KHSSL finals, I'll be very suprised.

--Chad Reese: Mr. Reese is the only returning KHSSL State finalist. He pulled fifth last year, behind Mr. Scisco, Ms. Handshoe, Mr. Hoover, and Mr. Jordan. He also took second at the Danville Tournament of Firsts, and won the KESDA Forum.

--Quentin Johnson: excellent record thus far. He took second in the Warren East portion of the WKU Big Red/Warren East Raider swing this year. He also pulled a fourth place at KCFL, just missing the bid for NCFL Nationals.

--Spencer Greenhaulgh: he seems to have developed well. I'll have to gauge his true progress, though, at the KYNFL tournament. I half expect him to take a bid in either USX or IX--maybe both. He has an very distinguished style. He'll final, I'm pretty sure.

-?-Kathleen Burke: She's done OK this year. Hopefully she'll turn it on for KHSSL.

-?-Joe Gallenstein: same as Kathleen. He has done pretty well this year, but he will really need to "kick it up a notch" if he wants a place on the stage for Extemp.

-?- Brice Acree: God only knows with this one. Last year, I didn't manage to break out of semifinals [1,1,5], and of course last weekend, failed to break out of preliminary rounds at KESDA. Anything could happen. I figure some, such as my distinguished team mate Ashley Litsey, might put me in as a solid second place contender... but hey, I'm not entirely comfortable with that kind of expectation. We'll need to see if I break first.

Otherwise, good luck to everyone at the KYNFL tournament this weekend, and KHSSL the following. Hopefully I'll be seeing everyone at both of these two major March tournaments.

Until then, peace and passion.

My money's on the typical picks. Good luck, guys!

Solo
1.) Jimmy Houlihan, Central Hardin

I am hopeful about my poetry and prose. But there is no chance for my solo. i have only finaled once. Unless i work on it, it will go no where--Semi-finals maybe...

From what I've heard, you're pretty darn good in solo, Jimmy; that's why you're up there. Good luck with it; I'm cheering for ya!

I'm not what you would call an expert in impromptu, but I kinda pay attention when they give awards, so I'll make a few predictions for them too:

1.) Brice Acree (He wins every time he finals in this.)
2.) Rebekah Allen (She's a consistent finalist.)

More later.

Broadcasting: I don't know much about it, but from what I know...
1. Lauren Fibel. Solid finalist, returning KHSSL finalist from last year
2. Ali Robbins. The self-proclaimed "Broadcaster 3000". She rocks, and works at it.
3. Ashley Litsey, because she seems to win everything she does. (althought I've never had the chance to meet her)

Extemp: Hmm... I'm going to go conservative in my rankings (what?)
1. Otto
2. Acree
3. Stroup
4. Reese (lack of sources... man... he needs to fix that... we print doubles sometimes guys.. you can have them..)
5. Greenhaughl
6. Burke

7. Johnson
8. Gallenstein. I think... I'll need a little bit of luck, lol.

Yeah, it's a shame that Raney doesn't get to go in EX, or Huot. And that I don't get to go in Impromptu. C'est la vie.

Impromptu:
See my predictions on that one. I stand by those.

Solo:
1. Mason Scisco
2. Houlihan
3. Greenhalgh

Poetry:
1. Lofton
2. Litsey
3. Houlihan

Prose
1. Lofton
2. Houlihan
3. Drance
4. Litsey
5. Robbins

Story:
1. Maria. She's worked too hard not to get there.
2. Bailey Swinford. SO much talent....
3. PJ Ritter. All he works on. He's a beast and a half.

I feel bad, because I don't see enough of Calloway or Knott to know who is going to break from there... I know they're good.. I just don't see them enough to know HOW good.

my predicitions for ST:

*Maria Wallace (Maria's piece is awesome.. she has been in finals..almost every time)
*Rachel Wigginton (Rachel made it last yr to the top 6, she makes it to finals almost everytime!)
*PJ Ritter (haven't seen him preform since we were in finals at the WKU swing)

I haven't seen Bailey Swinford preform in Storytelling, but from what i hear she has talent....

My vote was going to be on Cavner but she isn't competing in ST this year.

I myself am trying to make the top 6 I have been practicing non-stop.

I must admit to being a slacker when it comes to events I don't do, so my predictions will be limited

Extemp:
1. Otto-As with any extemp guess I've ever posted, I refuse to go out on a limb and guess either Otto or Acree over the other. I think this one is too close to call.
1. Acree-Acree is probably the only person I know well informed enough to get downright passionate over foreign relations between Poland and Austria (I've never seen it happen, but I have no doubt that you'd have at least ten sources for a speech like that, Mr. Acree). Get passionate and you've got it Brice
3. Stroup-Stroup has an amazing professional/relaxed style that many extempers will never be able to achieve. Plus, his analysis is downright solid. Mr. Stroup, you're a certified contender, my friend.
4. Greenhaulgh (sp)-He might be an extemp 'newbie', but there's no denying his style. Couple that with the impressive Boone County file and he'll go far
5. Gallenstein-Joe, you've been streaky on me this year, so I'm having a hard time placing you. Perform at your top level and your a competitor for state champion
6. Burke-haven't actually seen kathleen perform at all this year, I'm going based upon past performance and what I see as an irrational devotion to extemp (surpassed only by the esteemable Mr. Acree)

Once again, I must state that I am no real threat to any of the finalists. Last year was a fluke, as I was in the easier (by far) semi finals room. I expect I have a good chance to make it to semis, but I'm not going to miraculously start using sources effectlively in two weeks, and that's what seperates the finalists from the semis at KHSSL.

-der Reese (perhaps more predictions later)

My money's on Brice. Despite his consistent assertions that this is "my year," I think it's clear that it's his. And I completely agree w/Mr. Reese in that, should Brice happen upon one of the 10,000 topics he could be passionate about. . .we're all in trouble :P

Just a quick comment.

Reese, the reasoning that you will final is that you are just too good of a speaker not to. I mean, not many people try to throw a round and get a 2 for, what was it, going under time? I mean, in my humble opinion, you are the best speaker I've seen in the state of Kentucky, and I feel that the only way you won't final is if you just don't want to. I mean, you already won ONE state tourney w/this event... Who's to say you won't do well at the other?

it feels great to be recognized by the one and only joe gallenstein.

but yeah, i really need to work like a mad mutha if i'm gonna be on that stage. my goal is to triple semi, and that's it. i don't want to be unrealistic.
i figure my best bet is in improv. with melissa, cause she's a beast. but yeah.

...would give my ten cents on who's going to win, but i really don't feel like i have a valid opinion.

Oh no no no no, i dont think the freshman thing is a bad thing.. I see it more as an, opportunity.

No one expects a freshman to be like the next tom cruise, or the best new speaker on the block. But i like being a freshman because you have that chance to show everyone what you are really capable of doing. So if there are any incomin freshman here ( are there ? ) take next year as a big opportunity.. I like being a freshman and wish i could be one again without failing...

Haha.. i feel like i just spoke like a senior!! :D wow, this feels strange?

Im not sure if all these people are going but--

HI
-Melissa Cavner
-Brice Stacey
-Seth ( i dont know his last name )

DI
I dont know many DI people.. but one person has stood out..

-The one man team of Jordan Atkinson ( atleast i think that him ) lol. I saw his piece at CFL, it was amaZing, it was sad, yet a little bit humourous at the same time.

So i think that DI part is right.. i really do not know.

That's because you're beginning to mature Thomas. See, I can already see you as more mature than just "The Freshman" that you were at the beginning of the year. Yeah, make freshman year all that you can make it because it's really a learning opportunity. An opportunity to see what you enjoy and where you need to work so that you can come in the next three years and kick major buttox in the HS speech world.

Or something

Ya see... i don't know if it is my place to post predictions...cause i'm not well known enough but lets see:
This is what i think.

In Poetry...
Some good contenders are:
Ashley Litsey (LaRue)
Mauricus Lofton (Danville)
Kim Williamson (Bethlehem)
Molly Dunn (Laffayette)
Katie Greenwell (Bethlehem)
Ross Johnson (Danville)
Seth Brashear (Knott)--I don't know what pieces or what events he will be doing at state...cuz i know he has an H.I. and a Duo...
Connie Hagans (Knott)--I don't know what she is doing either, she doesnt several events too...including Impromptu and Extemp...
Jamie Lopez (Graves)--Took 1st at KCFL
And I of course want to do well...

In Prose...
I really couldnt say...the interp. events are much harder to call, there are so many good people and several people who have finaled numerous times.

In Solo...
I have only finaled once...my solo needs some cleaning.

There are a few people that i have seen grace that stage a few times
Mason Sisco (Danville)
Dawn Shultz (Danville)
Connie Hagans (Knott) she does this too...
Claire Forman (Greenwood)
And i am sure that there are plenty of other people who will be successful in this event.

In Extempt...
HAHA no..i wouldnt touch this event with a ten foot stick...LOL...i admire the really awesome Extempers in our state.
In no way is it my place to say predictions on this event...
But still i hope Brice and Courtney do well (they are my home dawgs)

In Story...
Yet another event that i couldnt make clear predictions in...BUT...
I still hope that
Maria Wallace (Bethlehem)
Rachel Wiggington (Bethlehem)
and Veronica (Somewhere)...do well.
That would be cooking coolness...

Duo...
No im not saying anything....
I hope everyone competing does well (there you go)

Impromptu...
Noper, i can't say anything...I hope my bud Zac Caldwell (Central Hardin) does well. Rebekah Allen (Bethlehem), and Brice too! (Rebekah is my home dawg aswell)

O.O.
Fan Zhou (Paul Laurence)
Rebekah Allen too!

Broadcasting...
Ashley Litsey and i really dont know anyone else...of cource i want the people from my school to do well that would be cool...So yeah...

I think this was enough...these are just some of Jimmy's thoughts and predictions...i ramble...

Sweeps:
1. Knott
2. Danville

I'd say that an "on the bubble" team would include Scott just because of the shear quality. Especially for such a small team. (I got your back you Scotties!)

SWEEPS

1) Knott---uh, duh
2) Danville--Gave Knott a close running for second at KESDA
3) Graves--when all major teams are at a tournament, this is what we usually end up getting
4) Boone--has yet to defeat Graves or Danville this year
5) Bethlehem--If they put on their A Game, they could move up to fourth place.

I think that eveyone has said it. But I'll speak on the behalf on those I feel have been "left out" as of yet.

HI:
Austin Tronzo (Bethlehem)
She's going to CFL Nats, took 5th at Gatlinburg, have been kicking tail in the latter half of the season... I'd say everyone needs to watch out for my girl!

Prose:
Mykul Guillen(Bethlehem)
If he puts his mind to it, he can do anything!
Either of the (sorry of the spelling) Villinuava sisters from Assumption could be wild cards. They are of super high quality!

Duo:
Reed/Mahalfney (sp...sorry KIM!)- Assumption
They beat myself and Maria eariler this year...they rock.

OO:
Megan Doyle (Bethlehem)
Now, I'm not just saying this because she's from my school! I'm just warning you guys...lately, it's like someone lit a fire under her butt (and it wasn't me...surprisingly...). She took 5th at both CFL state and Gatlinburg. I hope she at least makes semis! She's my one "wild card" prediciton!

That's all I can think of now! I think *about* everything else has been said...I'll check back later!

Ben Osher (sp?) I have seen his piece, I love it! HE has so much talent; he will go far. [Not sure ont he school]

Ben Ochsner is from Rowan County so he won't be going to KHSSL State. And yes his piece is very good. He has gotten first place with it at every single tournament he has been to including the Glenbrook National Tournament in Chicago, which, by the way, is the largest national tournament other than NFL.

I haven't seen Michael Gossum's name mentioned too much on here for broadcasting...i mean come on! the guys a sophmore and has broke five times in broad...taking a first place, and going straight ones, beating out lauren fibal at assumption...and he hasn't competed in broad since...he's a contender for 1st place if not...top three...and also Quentin Johnson another outstanding sophmore....he's broken numerous times in Extemp taking first place over acre at warren east...also placing fourth at KCFL and finaling in DX and IX at NFL this past weekend...I give him fourth of Fifth at state this year....watch out everyone...

Extemp

1.) Otto
2.) Acre
3.) Stroup
4.) Johnson
5.) Gallenstein.
6.) Greenhalgh

and if Chad Reese would actually try and use sources and not walk into semis with his tie undone, shirt rolled up...and rubbing his eyes from sleeping during extemp prep like he did this weekend at NFL...he could easily win first place...and it wouldn't be a stretch to say he's top ten in the nation...if he decides to try put him at first and drop everyone down a spot

Just a correction -

Brice Acree did win extemp at the Warren East tournament, if I'm not mistaken.

You are not mistaken, I wanted to look this up. Acree took first with Mr. Johnson pulling off a second place finish. Here is the pre-qual list that can help to clarify.

They are correct I took 2nd, and I believe I am also correct in stating that Brice hasn't been beaten all year in state by anyone except for Courtney, anyway here are my picks for extemp:

In no particular order
Courtney Otto (KCD)
Brice Acree (Larue)
Chad Reese (Scott)
Spencer Greenhaglh (Boone)
David Stroup (Danville)

and the 6th spot I think is basically between any of these people:

Joe Gallenstein (Boone)
Kathleen Burke (Boone)
Chelsea Darnall (Calloway)
Matt Ray (Graves)
Eva Copeland (Graves)
Victor Farrar (Larue)

I know this really isn't the right thread to say this but congrats to all the extempers that made either DX or IX finals at KYNFL, it was a long day and also congrats to Ali and Joe, your Public Forum Debate that I saw was really awesome you guys did a good job

-Quentin Johnson

Thank you very much. I must say that if you are pulling out the modesty card, then I can see why you didn't place yourself on there. IMHO, it will take quite a bit for you not to be a contender for one of those six spots and make it onto the stage.

I won't try to guess the overall placements (not yet, at least). Here are eighteen names of people that I think will probably semifinal. These are in reverse alphabetical order. An (*) denotes a person who, in my opinion, stands a good shot at finals, and (**) denotes the probable winner of the tournament. Yes, I did mark more than 6 for finals--these are the likely contenders. ****, I think that all of the people below are qualified for that final round.

-*David Stroup [Danville]
-*Chad Reese [Scott]
-Matt Ray [Graves]
-*MIC Raney [Boone]
-**Courtney Otto [KCD]
-Kim Milburn [Danville]
-Matt Litsey [Daviess]
-*Quentin Johnson [Graves]
-Brian Huot [Boone]
-Connie Hagans [Knott County Central]
-*Joe Gallenstein [Boone]
-*Spencer Greenhalgh [Boone]
-*Victor Farrar [LaRue]
-Chelsea Darnell [Calloway]
-*Kathleen Burke [Boone]
-Eva Copeland [Graves]
-Rebekah Allen [Bethlehem]
-*Brice Acree [LaRue]

I marked myself as a contender, just to give Ali a reason to go get drunk. Then again, I did fall out of Semi's last year.

So there we go... I pick 18 semifinalists and 10 finalists.

Anyone up on a side compitition? I have ten bucks to throw on predictions. ****, if people do it for NCAA, why not KHSSL too, eh?

Only $10? You've got a lot more than that to throw, last I checked :P

I'll take that bet...Meet me during lunch break at Debate Sweeps...I shouldn't be too hard to find, I'll be hanging with the boat load of hair and the giant mormon. Yeah, um...What does you marking yourself as a contender have to do with me getting drunk...

As hard as it may be to believe, I actually am too "goody-goody" to drink.

Great... seventy-four people=Harder time getting in...
I just hope I'm not stuck in a "Full House" per se.

Oh well, I think I can persevere. This will make it all so much more worthwhile for all those that break into SuperCongress. So, I bid thee good luck, and time to put my game face on!

Mmmm .. Congress envy ..

Figured I'd make this obligatory last post before I pack .. good luck to all. And while it's only theoretically possible, let's all kick some major butt.

Oh .. and there will be a koosh ball in attendance, if anybody finds themselves as easily bored and amused as me.

Okay, for the last and final time, please refrain from ranking me.

As I stated in an earlier thread about Impromptu rankings:

"It makes me extremely uncomfortable to have my name posted on the Internet (it's super-creppy when people--who I've never met before--walk up to me at tournaments and try to start conversations and know my name....*shudder*). I also have a great distaste (again a personal thing, not trying to knock the thread or anything) for ranking competitors, whether it's in the events I do or not.

So if you please, do refrain from including my name in any of these or other rankings. Thank you in advance."

I realize that not everyone read that thread or my post--but some of you did
and some continue to include me in their rankings (remember the part that says "refain from including my name in any of these or other rankings"?). And yes, I do realize it's a bit late in the game to be saying this, but it matters a lot to me and I hope you'll respect that.

So please, if you would be ever so kind, stop ranking me. Thank you again.
