I was just wondering who is coming to KESDA. Rowan County, like always, will most definately be there. Who else?

Ah man, Graves Co. is a power team! I wish all the power teams were to go.

LaRue is iffy. If we come, chances are good it'll just be Ashley Litsey (Prose, Poetry, Broadcasting) and myself (Extemp and Impromptu).

Is that only because it isn't within the realm of KHSSL? If that were the case, then any non-KHSSL tournament you go to is pointless. Winning State is not the only thing that is important. The reason we do forensics isn't to have a shelful of trophies, it is to make us better leaders and better communicators. I wish people would recognise that just because someting is different that it isn't bad. Now, I'm not getting on to you, Veronica, just the the whole "KESDA is a bad/pointless tournament" idea. Remeber, with every tournament you go to, the more practice you get and the more practice you get the better you are.
BTW, Veronica, what school are you from?

The thing I like about KHSSL as opposed to KESDA is this: Everyone is on an even playing field. The entries are limited so a small school with good people has just as much chance as a huge school! I think that is really neat and that we see who is really "it" in this way. No one gets overwhelmed by numbers alone. I just think that's cool.

Is Boone Co. coming to KESDA this year?
KY_Liberal
02-21-2005, 11:25 PM
Unfortunately, no. We floated around the idea at the beginning of the year, but due to time constraints, money, etc. we are not going to be at KESDA.
You know, y'all should really start doing KHSSL, and those of us not doing KESDA should start doing it... it'd make the speech world so much easier and enjoyable. Just my opinion obviously.

I really wish we (Rowan Co.) went to KHSSL on a large scale too. But our coaches believe that we should go to only one State level tournament and they like the fact that everyone can go to KESDA that wants to, so we go there. But I will be competeing at KHSSL this year. My mom is going as the school faculty representative, she's a social studies teacher.

Who exactly is coming to KESDA? Teamwise? I'm a former competitor who used to eat, sleep, breathe this stuff...and KESDA was awesome when I was around. A lot more fun than Khssl, anyway...so who's going? I just stumbled on this forum and wanted to ask...see how the state is doing now. I notice some of the big-dog teams are still doing well...and some aren't. Fill in a long-lost speech brother on the info...I hope KESDA is still as competitive as it used to be!!! Long live Speech!!! :D
Also, any new teams to the circuit? I remember there being a lot of teams from a lot of places...but who is gone and who is new? That's always fun to find out...especially when you've been out of the game for as long as I have been...

It looks like Ashley Litsey and I will be attending KESDA this year after all, thanks to some crafty work with systematic loopholes.
Litsey: Prose, Poetry, maybe something else
Acree: Extemp, Impromptu, Congress, and maybe I'll try for the Quad so that I can compete with the most esteemed Courtney Otto. I'll need to see if that's possible.
Otherwise, I look forward to seeing everyone there. Hopefully iy all works out.

DO they still go to KESDA? I used to have some buddies from there back in the day...they were pretty big back then. R they still around? I'm hoping so...are they still a big team? They were always consistent. They always had a great amount of talent...

I wasn't talking about Campbell...in my title I put KCD...Kentucky Country Day...that's what I was asking about...but it's good to hear Campbell is a new team! They weren't around when I was in the game...not too long ago, around 5 years give or take one...my old school is almost defunct now. I'd mention who they are but it saddens me to see them no longer in their glory days...

Former - Who would you be? I'm from KCD, and we do still go to KESDA.
Well, let me revise that. This year, only 3 of us are going. That's b/c most of our team has refused to show up all year. . . bad cases of senioritis, basically. Seeing the word "defunct," I'm inclined to think you're a former Bearcat. . .b/c that sure defines our team this year.

Wow...that sucks...I can see senioritis being a problem everywhere. We had a couple like that...and I'm not a bearcat, but let's just say that I'm from a town far away from you guys.
I just found out my team isn't totally 'defunct' but they only have 1-2 people now...and although 1 of them is pretty good it is really sad considering we, in my day, were a team of at least 20-25. That sucks...

So what schools are coming to KESDA as of now? Will it be big? I remember KHSSL being huge and KESDA being smaller, but KESDA had way more quality of talent in it's tourney. Well, the teams so far that have said they were going on this board are Rowan County, KCD, LaRrue County, Scott County and Cambell County. Other schools more than likely to go are Knott Central, Danville, Harrison County, Pike Central, Tates Creek, Henry Clay, Calloway County, East Jessamine County, and Greenwood. There are probably more but that's all I could remeber.

Calloway? Are they a western team? I don't remember them...the others are familiar, though. How big is Calloway? Will they be a challenge for the other big 3? Well, I haven't heard if Calloway is coming this year or not. They went to KESDA last year, so that's why I mentioned them. They are fairly good sized, about as big as Danville, maybe a little smaller. And yes, they are in the far west part of the state. Here I will post the results of the 2004 KESDA Sr. Forum:
1st Rowan County High School (712 Points)
2nd Knott County Central (627 Points)
3rd Danville High School (494 Points)
4th Graves County High School (159 Points)
5th Kentucky Country Day School (152 Points)
6th Calloway County High School
7th East Jessamine County High School
8th LaRue County High School
9th Greenwood High School
10th Harrison County High School
Though they came last year, Graves County won't be in attendance.

If Calloway is as big as Danville, how would a small KCD team beat them in sweeps, then? I know that quality wins out, but for them to be that big shouldn't they be top 4 almost automatically?

I was wrong about Calloway's size. They are quit a bit smaller than Danville, yet quite a bit larger than KCD. They are about the same size as Lafayette (whom doesn't attend KESDA).

You're from Scott Co., right? Is your whole team going? I used to compete against a real strong duo team from Scott...about 5 years ago. But what constitutes a large team? I've been out of the loop for a long time...and hearing that I have no idea how big Lafayette is. So if you're not bringing your whole team, would that mean you're bringing 15 members? Is that considered big or medium? To me, 20 or more is big. 35 + is huge! how big is big? well, it can be decieving - depending on how many events each individual person does.
campbell county, we have, maybe 12 people on the team, total. most tournaments, we have about 6 or 7 competitors. i think our record is 11 students competiting at one time - something like that. but since everyone does three or more events, we seem bigger than we are.
i'm excited about KESDA. mostly because i get to skip one day of school. kick ***.

Greenwood's not BIG, but we do have more people on the team this year than any of the other three years I've been here. 17 people...Good Heavens! I hadn't actually counted until just now! Probably doesn't sound like much when compared to maybe Graves or Boone, but still!
Only 5 of us have done speech before, but I'm the only one that's been on the team since Freshman year; four are Freshman now, and the rest are sophomores and two juniors. We're new and young, but we have a blast!

For our speech team class grade, each person from Rowan County is required to have at least two events ready by the end of the first semester. Now whether they pick up any more that that is up tp them, but most people from our team are taking anywhere from 3-4 events (on average). There is the occasional person (like me) who have six events because they are doing Group Interp plus the five alotted from the other flights. Our team has 43 (give or take a few) members, so we always have A LOT of entries.

Group Interp is brand new this year. It is a lot like Duo Interp, except that you can have 3-5 people in each group, you can use up to five chairs, and each school can only have 3 entries in the event. All of the other rules of Duo Interp apply, like each person can only have one character, there must be off stage focus, interp books are required, and the time limit is 10 minutes. The selection my tean is performing is called "Clap Trap." You can think of it as an HI with a different person playing each character. The other two teams from my school are doing "Runaways" and "Into The Woods."

Just like any interp event, you can sing a little, but they don't use any singing in it. There are many musicals out there that have been tured into successful speech pieces. To name one, Natalie Sintek from Eagan High School, MN won every single national tournament last year she went to last year (including the NFL National) with the musical "Ruthless" as an HI. You can cut a musical piece in such a way that you can use song lyricks and yet stay clear from melodies, rhym and rhythm.

No, you wouldn't wear a homecoming dress, you would wear something that you would compete in.
Yes the dance and the awards banquet are different. The dance is held on Friday evening and the awards banquet is held Saturday evening. At the dance, you can wear whatever you like. But at the awards banquet (especially if you are going to receive an award) you need to wear formal, competetion apperal.

Cool...sounds interesting. I'm guessing the other 2 you guys are doing are from straight plays, right? I'm only speculating on that assumption...I don't know those two pieces. Break a leg!!!
Yes, "Clap Trap" (humorous) and "Runaways" (serious) are straight plays.

The only thing I really don't like about KESDA is that you have to compete in tiny hotel rooms. Trying to do Solo Acting is a real ***** because of the limit space.

You think solo is bad in a hotel room...try storytelling. But I actually had a fondness for the hotel room competitions...it was rather relaxing compared to the drab school rooms we were used to. But finals were never in hotel rooms...only prelims. And the beds were nice and cozy to sit on while you were waiting your turn...as long as you didn't fall asleep, that is!

last year, the G-wood people had on 'homecoming' dresses...no glitter, but a little more fancy than just our speech suits. the guys did have on their speech suits, though
we planned on doing the same thing this year
