"The Lovely Bones" is a good female piece where the performer must look/act young. If you contact me (aim: Kickit1187), I can send you a rough cutting to show you what it's about and such.

Pieces about children getting taken adventage of are WAY WAY WAY overused. Is jus a bad idea, especially for H.I.*

*that was joke

when you think about it, everything is way way overused. i mean, there's only so many situations you can make a good serious piece out of. you never see anyone do a serious piece about...oh, their cat dying, for example. but if you were a judge, and there was a raped kid piece and a cat dying piece, which do you think would be stronger?

I think I would be more affected by a dying cat piece than a rape piece.. just because I've seen so many rape pieces!

well, i suppose that would depend on the strength of the performer. but i still stand by my opinion. i can't see a very good serious piece being made out of a situation like that.

on that note, out of curiosity, Jenn, may i ask what some of these pieces were? the only one i've seen was humorous, and the cat wasn't event the main focus of the piece.

That is so true!! There's a piece called "Rupert's Birthday" about a girl's pet cow and it made me sooooooooo sad, whereas the rest of the room full of rape and cancer didnt affect me at all.

Is that "Cyclops" by chance? I did that piece!

no, actually it was a duo called "P.S. Your Cat is Dead." it was about a guy who was an extremely non-successful actor, and he was also and extrememly non-successful writer, he just kept getting to short end of the stick in life. to quote him at the end of it: "Life is a poop sandwich, and every day i have to take another bite!" during all this, his girlfriend was leaving him. she wrote him a dear john letter, and ended it with "p.s. your cat is dead." and he doesn't notice that part of the letter, and ends the piece looking around saying "hey, where's my cat?"

oh, but the piece was hilarious! especially the guy. he's just so funny. b/c he does that indignant, stressed out, over-reactive thing so bloody well! he's just perfect for this character. and his partner is a very good balance to him. she never gets as worked up as he does, and the closest she ever comes, she's still a lot more passive. they just do it really well, in my opinion.

haha.... my old poetry had a part where a girl ran over a cat while driving. it sucked though (and that's why it's my OLD poetry).

and as far as something being overdone, a wiser interper than me once said:

there are no overdone pieces, there are just overdone performances.

find your own way of performing that's not necessarily what the audience expects. when you're working out blocking and emotions and stuff, think "what do i expect will happen here?" and then do something different.

I do a little girl piece that most people enjoy watching, because I make them laugh and cry with the piece. You always need to find a piece showing the true qualities of life.

I can't find the hardcopy of the script anywhere, but it exists..."Remote Control" by Samantha Grace Kelly. I do great as a child, one of my few gifts, hehehe.

There's a great piece called Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key. It's a children's book about a 4th grader with ADD. tHe book itself has some incredibly funny moments that climaz with an intensely dramatic scene in which Joey trips with a pair of scissors and cuts a girl's face. It almost sounds funny, but is made incredibly moving by the fact that all Joey wants is "to be a good kid" It's an incredible piece.

I saw Joey Pigza at Minnesota State in 2006. It won.
