View Full Version : searching for strong female prose, serious
ok, we're trying to find a strong prose for one of our girls. not having a whole lot of luck, and she'd like to get this taken care of. any help that anybody can give us would be greatly appreciated. she would prefer serious, and i honestly don't think she could do funny, anyway. she's a sophomore, and a first year speechie, but i think she can do really well with as many people as we have to help her out. so, and suggestions? thanks a bunch!

"The Woman Who Walked Into Doors" is by Roddy Doyle.
i saw Bald in the Land of Big Hair performed my Maggie Waid last year as a solo. actually it was dramatic performance and CFL state. she was amazing. that is a good piece.
ya prolly don't wanna do anything maggie just did...since she was state champ and all..**** whatever happened to finding your own piece?...falling in love with your selection is part of interping it.
well, this girl's new. she found a piece she loved, but it turns out another girl had already claimed it. and she's not just going to jump at the first thing we hand her b/c we've taught her better. look, she turned down a piece that lasure kept trying to force on her. continually. he acutally kind of still is. if a newbie can handle lasure like that, i'd say she'll be fine.

I did a piece last year about this girl who is trying to be perfect and ends up killing herself (sounds overdramatic, but its not too bad.) Its called VoiceOver by Shanley Jacobs - I think it was published by some University (you know, they put out those "student works" magazines)... anywho, if you are interested, I could send you a copy because I dont think its avaliable in stores or online.

I totally agree, but if this girl is new, I can imagine she doesn't have the best handle on what she needs to be looking for. I only really became good at finding pieces this past season - and that was with a lot of "practice" so to speak (and hanging around here). Like anything else it is a learning process, so I don't see anything wrong with starting her off on the right foot (as long as she doesn't come crawling back here, begging for suggestions season after season :)).
if you're willing to send a copy, that would be awesome.
yeah, i doubt she'll be here, i don't even think she knows about the site. this is all me being a kind senior volunteering to help a poor newbie.

If she is that new and won't do the coach's suggested piece, tell her to find her own piece or not compete at all. Time to put your foot down.

This is from 2004, check the dates.

'The Boy Who Danced Ballet' is a very good/serious piece. You can Google it. I was the only person on my team to break in prose and I did it with this.

I've always thought that Margaret Atwood's witchhunter poetry series would be the most awesome prose piece ever...
...think it's from her collection "morning in the burned house" but I actually don't know if it's long enough. :^
