Alright, this is it: the ultimate discussion concerning the differences/advantages/disadvantages of either a female HIer vs. a male HIer. I know this topic has surfaced before on the forum, but am interested to hear all of your views.

As a former female HIer, I always thought that it was so much more difficult for a female to do well in Humorous Interp via judges bias, audience response, etc. I competed my junior year at NFLs with I"nto the Woods" and was furious after my second Octafinal round when the five competitors who went before were big (yes, physically tall and broad). loud, somewhat macho guys with big, loud, and, in my opinion, obnoxious, pieces. Then I, last, proceeded to go up there and begin my teaser with, "Once Upon a Time!" --Great opening line to compete with against a bunch of masculin, sexually innuendoed pieces! Anyway, this made me mad. In state this past year was the same thing...our state final was composed of all guys, while a group of us semi-finalist females sat in a group in the round dumbfounded that some of these guys made it over us (3 of the females were sooo talented!). Needless to say, it was ridiculous.

Anyway, to get to the point...this year, I didn't do HI at nationals, but I did watched one of the rounds and then the final round and came to the conclusion that I actually do like watching male HIs more than female!!! Which leads me to believe that guys are just funnier than girls (not counting Natalie Sintek, but then again, she has short hair!) I can't believe I'm admitting this, so please let me know all of your takes on this topic!

It's not anything against females to say that men are just funnier by nature. I don't think it's being sexist because it's not purposely excluding female competitors. This is a big generalization, but a lot of it is a confidence thing. Girls tend to have more security issues than guys, and if you are lacking in confidence it definitely shows in your piece. Now I know that this is in no way universally true, because female competiors (i.e., Natalie) with that extra shot of self assurance are extremely capable in humors, because they can be secure with themselves.

Then again, it could just be that the y chromosome is eggplant shaped. ...and we all know eggplants are funny.

You know you can rearrange the letters in MOTHER IN LAW, into WOMAN HITLER? I tried it, and believe you me, it works!

I agree guys are naturally funnier than girls, well excepted. I could say something vulgar, but no one finds it funny and just stare at me like "Oh My God she just said that"; but my guy friend next to me say the same thing and everyone laugh.
 its weird and not fair!!!

I've also found that A LOT of really funyn pieces are for Male, and while there are some great female pieces out there, they're harder to find. That might also be a disadvantage.

There may be more pieces out there for males but if they try girls can be the best. I mean, on our team one of the best HIers is a girl she is so funny

I have noticed that it is funnier to watch a guy be a girl than it is a girl being a guy...****, in my humerous last year my 2 lead characters were girls...

Girls trying to impersonate(sp?) guys isn't as funny...I don't know why...

guys being girls is funnier because it's less socially acceptable for a guy to be girly than a girl to be a tomboy or display male characteristics (wearing pants? playing sports?) may sound cliche, but it's true. We all laugh at what's slightly disturbing, and a girl doing guy things seems more normal than the opposite.
