My coach has put me in charge of writing up a "vocab list" for all our new competitors next year. Were there any terms/words that you didn't understand your first year?
Any input is greatly appreciated!

popping, intro, blocking, cutting, breaking, all of the abbreviations: OI, OO, LD, etc. Affirmative, Negative, Rebuttle, Contention, Value. I can't think of anymore off the top of my head

i was confused by "1 down" and time signal stuff, as well as saying things like "i hit so and so in prelims"- mainly general terms you hear around tournaments

all of the above (especially "breaking", lol, that always used to confuse me). and then this is something I learned from you guys: you guys will say something like, "Oh, 'so-and-so' dropped in quarters..." well, in Illinois when you say they dropped I think that you mean they were disqualified - went over time or something, instead of just meaning they didn't make it out of that round.

Thanks guys, keep 'em coming!
i was confused by the scores themselves. you know, we get our sheet back at the end of the tourney and i hear everyone saying "OMG! how did i get a 6 there?!?" and "wow. i got the 2. wow." when i was new to this it all confused me a lot.

same here. For your list, maybe you should add a basic explanation of the scores you need to get into final rounds, as well. As for the scores, the worst part was when i got a six at the beginning, became happy, and then learned it was bad :( lol, oh well :)
my first tournament ever was my school's swing, so i only competed in 2 rounds. i got twos both rounds and didn't know what it meant, so i took it to my brother and said "is this a good thing?" and he just kind of stared at my sheets and then said "you got twos? that's really good!" everyone was really surprised, since i was a freshman and had refused to practice for anybody. and i was just kind of like "what's the big deal? what did i do?"

I actually have a book that has a bunch of terms in the back for speech, if you would like me to e-mail them to you. Sorry, too lazy to type right now.
