so i had my first experience at nationals and it was a good one...i saw several good programs and met alot of great people
i ended up making semis and had a big mess up
apparently the judges had been waiting for awhile (they posted OI late) and i was the last one to get into the round, and i went first...so, i screwed myself, i was off, and i dropped like a bad habit
sorry, i just had to vent a little haha
but CONRATULATIONS to ganer newman and Liam HIggins and Samantha Debeveck
and everyone else who made finals....i hadnt seen the top two perform their poetry but i bet they were amazing
and congratualtions to all those who fell too early, we know you could have and should have gone farther

Did anyone see the finals? Opinions?
There was a general sentiment among the finalists ranked 2-6 that something majorly messed up must have happened to place teddy first, b/c he was not good.
ps- phillyone- who are you, and what did you compete with? I'm Joshua Isaacs, I did Picka Pocketoni and The Bitter Graves.

oh ya, I hit you in octos.
The semis rounds were just tough. Mine was the hardest round I've had in all 4 years. I'm still amazed that I made it out.

philly, you did taylor mali? how did you do with that piece (i can tell you went to nats, but other than that) are any of his poems particularly good (or bad) im thinking of doing some of his stuff as a double entry for next year (main event is prose). are any of the poems particularly hard?

hey tourretic...yea i did taylor mali...
i did fairly well throughout the year with it (semis at cfls, 1st at upenn, 1st and finals at a few local tourneys...i went to emory but i did my prose there)
taylor mali has alot of great stuff....recently its been done more and more, but his poetry isnt really hard(if you mean the general interpretation of it)
its all pretty simple, you just have to be real with it
so, taylor mali is a good choice to go with...if you want to talk about specific poems or anything you can IM me at dcme1287 or email me at bassprofes@yahoo.com(i'm more then willing to help you pick out some stuff or something)...if not, then good luck next year

Hey guys, Stephen Bardwell. Yeah Taylor Mali is a great poet. But be careful, a lot of his stuff is overdone. Your best bet is to stick with Slam Poets such as Taylor Mali, Erik Ott, Shappy Seasholtz, and many others. Their poems are always the best to perform. But something to think about, rather than baseing your program around a certain author, try baseing it on a certain topic. That way, you can have a few different authors with their different views on your topic. And vary between humorous and dramatic, it kills the judges hahaha. Anything else guys?

Oh and Josh, i think you can attest to teddy's hilariously bad performance. just a thought lol

yea taylor mali is overdone, , see if you can find a spoken word/poetry slam book.....that's where you'll find good stuff...

Oh, and Dan, i just wanted to let you know that i really enjoyed your prose. Seen it many times very badly done, it was nice to see it done well. Sucks you didnt make it to finals with us. you DEFINATELY whooped Teddy's butt. lol

Word to that. Nothing is going to change what the judges say, but I mean the other finalists were laughing! Come on!

Sadly no, my career as a HS speech competitor has come to a sad close. I'm hoping to join the team at NYU, since freshmen tisch drama students can't audition for anything, and I may find time to coach on the side.
Best of luck to all you guys.
