Extemp rankings

I don't know If anyone noticed, but extempprep.org has created some extemp rankings. They're not perfect, but their worth talking about.

The problem it seems with those rankings is that they only take into account finalist performances, and not where they fell in larger tourney break rounds. Secondly, a lot of those folks are from the same schools, which has always been a flagrant sign of support for locals.

Nonetheless, good effort, as you said, if for no greater reason, they're good for conversation.

Furthermore, now that I look at the results from which they drew their figures... there are some rather sketchy tournaments if you're planning to compare them to the Harvard's MBA's Yale's etc... a tournament which is obviously Florida-based and includes pretty much all Floridians? It sets a bad precedent...

Chances are that list is only updated up to UPENN of this year. It is devoid of some serious extemp players (Anish Mitra, the Eastview HS kids, Brian Donohue, Max Wolson, Liz Kraut, Logan...just to name a few).

Everyone is of the same sentiment, most-likely, Justin. But its all good G, I don't think any ballerific extempers are ready to cry because they're not on the internet. And McGeary has paid the cost to be the boss.

speak for yourself mr donohue...upon realizing id been unranked against a girl who hasnt competed this year...and a kid with the last name dubin (ok so dubin is ok)...i nearly broke down

additionally congratulations on winning states mr donohue...even if you won it a year after an extemp state champ meant something BURRRN

IX and USX were both 2 man shows, its all good. I know Max, but to say the least, lets see how everyone does in the BEEEEHIVE. I don't think the Mormons are ready for Florida.

ummm, how are these rankings conducted? because i see two people there who have never beaten me when i have competed against them--which has been more than once. just wondering.

I'm pretty sure its a compilation of final round appearances how they placed.

It is pretty heavily tilted towards winners. Most of the people at the top of the rankings have either won a tournament or were 2nd place at several. This is pretty well favored towards those who win tournaments. Of course it would favor flash in the pan performances.

ok the list is from some faceless source w/ no info on how results are found and with obvious flaws (i.e one girl ranked who hasnt competed since last year and someone whose only break round appearance this year was at the oh-so-legit florida blue key)....so its def not worth the caring
