Just a place to post some of the Oratory advice/techniques you guys have learned. Here are mine.

* Recite your speech while biting down on a pen to increase enunciation.

* Recite your speech while vacuuming to help with low volume problems

* Have some sort of blocking (scheduled gesture) In your speech and memorize your blocking at the same time as your speech itsself. This helps because if in a round you forget the next part of your speech your movment/blocking might trigger the next sentence in your mind.

* For last minute memorization do a simple task (sorting a deck of cards, writing simple sentence over and over again) while reciting your speech. This helps the brain organize thought content.

* Use alliteration somewhere in your speech. This adds humor and grabs attention.

* Incorporate immediate aspects somewhere in your speech, like the Weather, something significant that occurred that day/week, something the room you are competing in, or (as I do) give reference to other speeches that have gone before you in your round. This helps make your speech more personal/relevant.

* Try to incorporate your name some where in your speech, this will make you more memorable when it's decision time.

* If you are nervous tap the finger tips of your hands together repeatedly (PINKIE TO PINKIE THUMB TO THUMB ECT) this releases endorphins into you system that calm you down.

WELL, there it all is. All that I have learneed in 4 years of OO, hope ya all will be as open. THANX :D :D :D

* make eye contact with the people in your room, and be smiley. that will get them (usually) to do the same, and in turn, make you give a better performance/speech or what have you

* have fun with the speech. you'll do the best that way

*never ever ever try to be funny. if you have to try, it isn't going to get a laugh. just let it flow

* practice your speech in front of a mirror- it'll help with posture and poise

*if someone happens to be drifting off during a round and you want to get their attention back- stare at them. they'll eventually see you looking at them, become flustered, and try to focus on what you're saying.
