Michigan District results were as such. It was the first qualifier since 2001, not too many competitors, but still, some real talent is going to Utah.

That be it. Not sure who's able to make it or what alternates are going. Mostly glad that we get to make the trip this year. Hopefully some noise will be made, cuz Michigan forensics is pretty cutthroat and is evident on www.themifa.org, but Nationally, has never made a real splash.

"Hey kids I got an idea pop in a video and bam you got yourself a winning piece and since most judges don't know the national circuit you can get away with it" However once these pieces get to nats the judges there get insulted and it bombs thereby wasting a spot.

Have you seen this person's cutting? Is it identical to Finley? If not, why don't you cut him some slack. If it is a copy, I think you are overestimating the judges at Nationals. They are not, for the most part, hip to the National circuit. That is why you will also see every variation of Roald Dahl being done at Nationals this year; because they were successful in Salt Lake City.

Hey, Sharples! Or more likely, Kungfuhampster! Do either of you know the results this year from the HoA district? I came for sems to see how my pupil did (not well), but I had to leave to play Grand Theft Auto, instead. Anyone know how it went down?

South Dakota National Qualifying Tournament was this last weekend. Here are the results of those in the I.E.'s going to Nats!
Duo:
1st place: Alex Hartman & Andy Schnabel (SF Lincoln) "Dominick and Eugene"
2nd place: Chris Garcia & Ali Horsted (SF Lincoln) "The Secret Knowledge of Grown-ups"
Drama:
1st place: Hannah Sorenson (SF Lincoln) "Inside-Out/Upside-Down"
2nd place: Alex Hartman (SF Lincoln) "Telephone Man" *has to go in duo!
3rd place: Maggie Tatone (SF O'Gorman) *qualified in Alex's spot.
Humor:
1st place: Ali Horsted (SF Lincoln) "Anton in Show Business" *Has to go in duo!
2nd place: John Michels (SF O'Gorman) "Bullets Over Broadway"
3rd place: Morgan Peck (SF O'Gorman) *qualified b/c Ali is going in duo
Original Oratory:
1st place: Chloe Goldade (SF O'Gorman)
2nd place: Renugan Raidoo (SF Lincoln)
Interesting to note that just about every single piece you just posted that qualified to NFL from SoDak has been done well at NFL or on the National Circuit in recent years. That includes Anton in Show Business (Elodie Lee/Eagan) and Bullets Over Broadway (Nick Fox/HolyGhost), who both had success with these pieces last year and are not popular material. Dominick and Eugene and Inside-Out/Upside-Down have all made appearances in recent years in NFL Finals of each event. Is it really that hard to find new material?

True many pieces have been done before, but think about how many pieces have been done hundreds of times and many done successfully many times. How many pieces have been in finals or semi-finals more than once between the categories? I can think of many - "Inside Al", "Wrong for Each Other", "Actor!", "The Exonerated", etc. It is not so much that the piece has been done before, but whether or not the cutting, take on it, acting, and differences make it distinct. Last year, Cory Stewert's first place finish with "Confessions of a Nightingale" had been done in the final drama round back in '98- which also won Nats that year. However, I don't think that undermines Stewert's amazing performance last year with a piece that had been done before in many districts and at nationals before. You know what I mean? It all matters on the performance, cutting, and characterization of it. If students can make the piece "their own" than more power to them - no matter the piece.
I'm still bothered slightly that a full district is using pieces that have been successful in the past. Why must students bypass so frequently the academically-beneficial process of finding new/original material just for the easy trophies? Thankfully if we keep looking at the pieces from last year's NFL final round, most hadn't been done frequently before.

i disagree. I have seen these peices done by south dakota and i personally performed secret knowledge of grown-ups last year. all these cuttings are different. They all focus on different aspects of the play. Sure people will be like... another one... but they are completly different

I agree with Alex. Just because they are doing the piece doesn't mean they automatically took that preformance from someone else. I would watch making such an assumption!

It should be noted that Morgan Peck and Maggie Tatone both qualified with new pieces. To say that SD only uses pieces from the past is simply not true but I understand how you came to that conclusion. Every state that I know of uses a mix of old and new and we are no different than any other state. Lincoln High does not copy the pieces - they are new cuttings and certainly refreshing performances.

Obviously someone from Lincoln HS is posting results but they should know that SD results belong in "Wide Open Spaces" and not "Midwest" :D That is where SD is listed on this website.

It sucks that Northern can qual 3 in duo and HI and stuff while southern and central are stuck with only 2, leaving behind the Berkely/Florida champion in O.O. and other such sadnesses.
