Yay for the milton kids! Tina: how did Josh do in extemp? and sophie in DI?

Lesse...Josh dropped in quarters (i hear he didn't do very well that round...got 4th...), and Sophie went to octo's.

And STD...don't go around dissing the Chaloff. I heart him. He is the real ultimate orator. :D

Wow, it's like CFLs all over again. Good on Ron though.

MFL speech <3's scott. Don't pick a fight with us, 'cause we will totally win.

P.s.: Anyone know who won extemp/congress/duo?
p.p.s.: Tina- did you go>? what event did you compete in?
p.p.p.s.: Anyone have the full finalists in DI?

No, I did not go. I went today to cheer people on...i love my team ^_^

HI finals were AWESOME. That had to be the best final round in HI EVER. May we all live to see the quailty of those pieces reproduced in a future HI round. Amen.

Oh, please. You don't know Lisa like I do. She's a fake. And Scott wasn't as good as all the hype. I give honor to whom honor is due, and in my oppinion Lisa and Scott are ok speakers, nothing spectacular.

Scott just won harvard, after placing 2nd last year. I think that qualifies as "as good as all the hype."

And furthermore, what hype are you talking about, exactly?

How did the other Fla duos do?
We won. David Kenton and Me'Lisa Modestil from Nova took 1st. That is the second year in a row that the winning duo has come from the Fla Manatee district.

BTW, the girl who won HI wasn't "Eliza Daschle," it was Erica Dasher with The Onion.

ERICA WON?!?!? I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!! :D i'm so glad to hear how all the UTNIFer's are doing. does anyone know any info on how blake williams did? he did "an almost holy picture." i have a feeling things didn't go so well for him since his piece is a bit unorthodox, but it always has me at the edge of tears everytime i see it.

SniffyGuy
02-17-2004, 06:46 AM
erica wasn't the only ut'er to kick ***. there were five finalists in HI, for instance: erica, jessie gall, lisa campbell, duval bodden and chelsea d'hemercourt. all of them rocked. i know there were at least two in extemp: ron (donr remember his last name) and dave tucker. Sami won DI and scott OO. Matt Friedman and myself finaled in Duo. I'm sure I'm forgeting some. And this doesn't include the huge list of ut semi-finalists from UT. !..! (those are horns)

Phil Teston
02-17-2004, 08:26 AM
i dont know if anyone else found this funny, but duvall (6th in HI i think / iona prep) started doing the "horns" thing...not knowing what it really was for.

i thought the team that did "Ruthless" should have won...the blocking was cleaner, and the acting was top notch. personally i thought the team that won lacked a little in these spots, but whatever, what do i know

regardless, HI and duo finals were amazing, kudos to those that made it...whoever wanted the pieces from duo finals either e-mail me or wait for me or anyone else to post it.

SniffyGuy
02-17-2004, 09:27 AM
i actually picked ruthless for fourth. yeah, they were funny and had interesting blocking, but the piece is way overdone (it was in harvard finals two years ago) and, seriously, how much screaming at the top of your lungs can you take? By all means, they deserved to final, but i like seascape with sharks and dancers, mr. big, and urinetown (though i'm definately a little biased about the last one) better.

Mlapin
02-17-2004, 10:12 AM
Urinetown was spectacular; it deserved to win. I was upset that so many people left in the middle of the round to get a seat for HI finals because they missed the best duo there. It's alright jeff, you guys will win nationals.

SniffyGuy
02-17-2004, 10:33 AM

i dont know that we deserved to win though; it was a really good round, but thanks a lot anyway :D

I only got to stay for "Ruthless" and "Seascape with Sharks and Dancers" and I'm being biased because I roomed with Kelly at FFI and I absolutely love her :D but I definitely think they were better...and what do you mean about Ruthless and the screaming??? seascape with sharks was all screaming up until the very end when she said she chose the blanket...It was good...but Kelly and Jessica were definitely amazing...{inside joke}Varsity Kelly your my inspiration...{insider}

I also think that Kevin Bushek should have been in finals...that was really messed up...and did anyone ever find out where the Matt Damon rumor came from???

SniffyGuy
02-17-2004, 12:49 PM
i really liked seascape for sharks and dancers and i picked them for the top three. I did not mean 'screaming' in the sense two people who get angry with each other yell at each other. i meant that i felt ruthless, while very funny, at points overdid it. had they backed off a little with their attempts to pound laughter out of the audience, it would have been better. the goal in humorous acting is not to make it seem like you're trying to be funny. the goal is to be funny. if the audience sees you trying to be funny, you wont be. and you most definitely cannot deny that ruthless is WAY overdone.
(don't get me wrong though, they were excellent and i enjoyed watching it very much).

Ryan
02-17-2004, 12:54 PM
If they were trying to be funny, wouldn't the audience have noticed that and not laughed?

SniffyGuy

OMG!!! Jessica and Kelly you guys totally own!!!

:D Thank Ya

i thought the team that did "Ruthless" should have won...the blocking was cleaner, and the acting was top notch.

Thank you very much! I definately think David and Melisa deserved the win, though. That was the best I had seen them perform, and I've seen it quite a few times. But thank you for the compliment - I had SoOoOoOoOoO much fun doing it, and that just made me feel like I did exactly what I had been aiming for - making a whole lecture hall full of people laugh and talk about me later.....

seriously, how much screaming at the top of your lungs can you take?

Try it sometime
I really really enjoyed your duo and was incredibly insulted when so many people got up and left to watch HI finals.
To what you've said: Yes, Ruthles is extremely overdone. We know. We got a lottttt of **** for it. We actually werent even going to compete with it for that reason, but certain things came up. Thats all.
What you said about forcing humor: Yeah, in a way we did. But it worked. But I think some of what you may have seen as pulling out laughs was just us trying to be as controlling of the room as we possibly could - capturing that entire lecture hall and being as big as we could. Perhaps thats not your style, but that was what we were going for. Thats all.
Anyway, like I said, I loved your performance. Being in finals was enough of an honor, and honestly I dont know how the **** I ended up that lucky.

I've come to realize that i'm being a little unfair. I really should be giving you two a little more credit. I guess i was a little jealous that everyone was saying that you guys were amazing  . You really were excellent, and yes, while the piece is overdone, it was very different from other times i've seen it. I feel so stupid that i came across almost sounding bitter and arrogant, because really, when you get to a Harvard final round, everyone is just so good that its practically a coin toss for who gets first. Plus, the fact that you are a junior/sophmore team makes it that much more impressive.
I also am very flattered that you like our own duo. :D best of luck at nationals and i hope to see you there.

P.S. it wasn't luck that you were there.

02-17-2004, 05:36 PM
I just want to say to all of my fellow competitors in the duo finals that you were all AMAZING. Seriously, one of the best final rounds i have ever competed in. I would like to say also, that every duo in that round had something amazing that distinguished them from everyone else, and it was refreshing to see new things. I would also like to give kudos to Mr. Big for that INCREDIBLE piece of blocking when the guy got shot. I was in awe. Anyways, great job to everyone, and I wish you all luck in the rest of the year and at NFLs...hopefully I'll see you there.

Haha. I just want to say for the record. (As a former UT-er) Of course I knew what I was doing. Everyone kept reminding me to "show your horns!" and then I almost forgot to! And I guess when I did, it might have looked funny. (Sorry) Five of the Six Finalists were from UT! How awesome is that? Though it may not have seemed it, I held up my horns with pride.

Hello all, I am posting to send congratulations to DAVID! I told you david, after blue key final round...you were the most amazing actor i had ever had the opportunity to watch, you deserve it far more than anyone else in that round. Opinions are valid on this thread, but lets be fair-the winner was DAVID! congrats again. Also, to my boyz sulak and hoffenberg for giving me heat (lol). Congrats to kelly and Jessica, I do think u should be going to NFL nats with us jessica(duo), its too bad :(

I'd say that David got ripped off in DI by only getting to Quarters, but when you win Duo, being ripped off in anything else doesn't really matter.

In response to Jesse's post, i think that overall this year's HI round was much more solid. While i didn't actually watch them, i saw 5 of them in previous rounds and thought they were excellent, and i heard many good things about Apollo's. Seriously, i can't imagine more signature moments in a single round. Erica's ending btw the way is possibly the best ending to an HI of all time. Good stuff.
What's really impressive about HI this year though is not just that the final was excellent, but the entire field was excellent. Quarters this year (at least for me) was like watching a semis or even final round from last year. You probably could have substituted any number of the semifinalists for the finalists this year, and it still would have been an amazing round. Props to HIers across the nation this year for bringing solid piece after solid piece.
.... and props to UT for having been the birth of most of them! Aw yeah.

sorry duv...from the side benches at the floor level, with the raw sewage smell seeping in, its hard to tell, so please accept my apologies.

speaking of which, did anyone else happen to get a whiff of the "raw sewagey fragrance" which engulfed our section of the hall?

HI finals...apollo, apollo, apollo with the oNE HANDED CARTWHEEL!!! i wish i could do that. everyone was amazing btw...especially whoever took first (im so sorry for forgeting your name) and the person with the venus fly trap...as you can see im not good with names or piece names...and yeah OUTKAST!!!

also, in no particular order, the duo pieces from finals for whoever asked:

"Your Obituary is a Dance" - Barnard Cummings
"Mr. Big" - Woody Allen
"Seascape with Sharks and Dancer" - Don Nigro
"Urinetown the Musical" - Greg Gatis and Marie Hollmann
"Ruthless" - Joel Paley
"The Laramie Project" - Moises Kaufman
"Just Before Sleep" - James Still

congrats to all who broke (and didn't, cause we're still cool)

Apollo did Once Upon A Wolf. I'm actually pretty surprised on how well he did with interpreting it, since the script on its own isn't that good...ONE HANDED CARTWHEEL OH YEAH!!!!!

chrispac
02-22-2004, 12:56 PM
he did a one handed cartwheel in his performance?

awjeez317
02-22-2004, 02:44 PM
yeah he did. It got laughs, but he moved WAY to much. You are not supposed to technicaly touch your knees to the floor, and he did...A LOT. That is why he was ranked down, because of how much he moved all over the place.

chrispac
02-22-2004, 08:35 PM
dude, that type of thing will get u knocked out during prelims, we dont consider that HI appropriate.

dmcordon9
02-23-2004, 07:55 AM
I think its funny that they would count him down for something like that at a national ciruit tournament. I think its difficult to have set rules when you have competitors coming from all different states, each with their own set of ruled. I would not have marked him down on the fact that his kneed touched the ground. Moving around too much is a different matter.

billabong
02-23-2004, 11:57 AM
There is no rule against movement! That is just a myth! Let's not degrade Apollo for being very original and talented because he can be creative and add physical humor to his HI.

awjeez317
02-23-2004, 03:42 PM
There is a rule against movement actually. Otherwise the preson with the most amount of physical humor would win every tournament, when that is not the case Most physical HIs get knocked out of prelims.

Histriona
02-23-2004, 04:23 PM
His one-handed cartwheel was indeed impressive, as was his ability to guess my sexual orientation (haha, Jesse..."Nah, you straight!").

He was good, but I felt that his movement was inappropriate. There are rules to be abided by when you go to a national tournament, no matter where you come from. How can you be fair without using a general standard? It should be the competitor's responsibility to be familiar with the rules and limitations.

SniffyGuy
02-23-2004, 05:50 PM
i did not get to see apollo's HI, but his duo was in finals as well, and it had a TON of movement. now, i don't know about how i might judge those kinds of pieces, but i will say that Mr. Big was **** fun to watch. So while i don't know whether or not its the best piece i've seen all around, it was definitely one of the most entertaining. and thats something to be proud of.

Phil Teston
02-23-2004, 07:45 PM
the sheer fact the can move like that automatically tosses the rules out the window...i dont know anyone who can move like that, at least with the same features as apollo...

...im kidding about the rules part, but still...a one handed cartwheel? i cant even do a two handed one

chrispac
02-23-2004, 08:21 PM
actually, a one handed cartwheel would be crossing the "extreme" lines, if it was done around here in a final round, it wouldn't get much applaud but instead people will just stare and think "what is he doing, gymnastics of HI?" in my opinion the 1 handed cartwheel thing is just too much.

How is the Mr. Big DUO? Is it as good as last year's MR. Big from Logan HS that was in National semifinals?

Jesus
02-23-2004, 08:51 PM
There is a rule against movement actually. Otherwise the preson with the most amount of physical humor would win every tournament, when that is not the case Most physical HIs get knocked out of prelims.

Nope...there is no official rule against any movement. The only rule about movement in NFL is in DUO, the comptetitors cannot touch or look at eachother, other than in the intro.

HI...there are no rules...but if you do a cartwheel, you are just a stupid person who is *******izing the event, however there is no rule against it.

in my opinion the 1 handed cartwheel thing is just too much.

usually a judge will say the same...At Berkeley, in DUO, in prelims, we had a judge that said "No touching the ground!" from the east coast, and we got docked one place...so we're thinking of cutting it out. What do you think national judges will think of this?

SniffyGuy
02-28-2004, 05:07 AM
i can't pretend to be able to predict what judges will say in response to the floorwork, but i can provide my opinion on floorwork (and movement in general)

I don't mind, and in fact i often applaud, movement in duos, so long as the movement isn't too excessive and it fits with the piece. For instance, Bent as performed by Paul Kite and Chris Heijl. At the climax of the piece, one of the characters was lying on the ground, the other kneeling down close to him. This is only the tip of the ice berg of the kind of blocking they had in this duo (and it was dramatic too). And i absolutely loved it because it fit the piece and the performers very well. It didn't seem like they were out to impress or anything; they were simply using the blocking to enhance the dramatic moments and such. In short, it was one of the most amazing duos i've ever seen.

Although... i believe the got dropped after harvard quarters for their floorwork.

[quote=awjeez317]There is a rule against movement actually. Otherwise the preson with the most amount of physical humor would win every tournament, when that is not the case Most physical HIs get knocked out of prelims.

"Nope...there is no official rule against any movement. The only rule about movement in NFL is in DUO, the comptetitors cannot touch or look at eachother, other than in the intro."

****Actually Jesus needs to check out the Rostrum article written by Don Crabtree. I believe it is from January. But the article is all about the myths that govern the rules of duo. No touching is one of those myths. Touching is permitted. That's not to say it is desirable, but it is definitely legal according to the NFL. Sorry to burst the bubble of the almighty Jesus.

Are there any old schoolers in here who can tell me where Lisa Campbell is from? Please.

Haha! I guess I qualify as an old-schooler now since I know the answer. Lisa Campbell attended Milton Academy and graduated the same year I did. Wow, I am old.

Now, can you tell me if she did The Sisters Club as in the book by Megan McDonald?

I was just about to say that since this weekend at my finals round in Duo, the team that got first did a piece called The Ultimate Drama and their intro talked about the no touching rule was an urban legend, it was hilarious.

Also, some people we're talking about someone who got marked down in their HI round for having too much movement for a cart wheel? That's weird, at TFA State last year, the HI state champ did a back flip in his piece.

*shrug* what can I say? What's controversial and rule bending one year becomes commonplace after a few seasons.
